You know DWA has had a bad year as none of their films this year have opened at number 1, although Mr Peabody and Sherman did rise to the top spot the weekend. They're lucky HTTYD2 was successful and had virtually no competition from animated films aside from Planes 2 otherwise it would have been a lot worse.

Poor poor Dreamworks... :(

Did they movie Penguins to Thanksgiving so they could have a sure fire hit before Home? Maybe they should have just stuck with the original release, and have Home underperform initially, but have Penguins open to much more in March.

I think they switched Home and Penguins to avoid another writeoff but it looks like they're going to have another writeoff anyway now that Penguins has underperformed

They better fix it it's killing me. Lol. And BH6 is looking to drop less than 5% this weekend. That's a lot better than Ralph's 10.8% drop last thanksgiving 2012. Imagine a world where penguins didn't exist. Baymax would've soared even higher. Haha.

It might have been because Rise of the Guardians + (kind of) Life of Pi is much more competition than Penguins.

Based on comparison with 9 other animated films that played during Thanksgiving (Bolt, Happy Feet, Frozen, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, The Muppets, Rise of the Guardians, Megamind and Madagascar 2), Penguins will earn $36-37M over 5 days. That is higher than the $32.3M 5-day opening of Rise of the Guardians. However, that film was Christmas-themed which allowed it to have a very impressive post-Thanksgiving weekend hold (-43%) and very small decreases in the weekends leading to the Christams holidays (no bigger drops than -31%). Guardians made $103M in total. Penguins had a lower CinemaScore (A- vs A) and is a prequel so it will definitely be more front-loaded. I don't see how it could cross $100M. Also, if we compare it to The Muppets, another franchise-based film that opened over Thanskgiving to $41.5M, Penguins could earn less than $80M by the end of its run.

Hopefully Penguins does great OS!
