I have no idea whether it's ho-hum or not. And "popcorn spectacle" can mean many things.

WrathOfHan
Really the only criticism I'm seeing is that the film is torn between being like Alien and being like Prometheus. Fortunately, it seems like the horror parts are fucking amazing.
John Marston
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/alien_covenant/reviews/?sort=rotten 5 positive and 2 negative. Variety and Hollywood Reporter not added yet
UNDERDOG
It seems that the 3rd act is a mess? Seems to be a common criticism I've seen, but that's pretty much it.
RobinHood26
Reviews seem to be just want I wanted/expected bring it on.
WrathOfHan
I still think this is doing over 50M on OW. It's the first horror film in 2 months and the first horror film people give a damn about in 3 months, so the market is definitely ripe.
MrPink
Not sure if it hits 50 but thinking it can do high 40s. Fox has been very aggressive with the marketing. Reviews seem solid enough though I don't think it'll necessarily assuage fears from Prometheus. I don't think legs overall will be great however. Maybe a 47/115 run or something like that.
UNDERDOG
Hearing Danny McBride is a standout. Heh. Like there was any other outcome possible. Edited May 7, 2017 by UNDERDOG
filmlover
I actually liked Prometheus more than most people did so these positives have me very excited to see this.
WrathOfHan
Several reviews are comparing Ridley Scott's direction to George Miller's in Fury Road

The thing I'm getting most interested from the reviews is the dynamic between Walter and David, the Fassbeast. I could be wrong but a review or two seems to hint at some kind of homoeroticism between them? Sounds amazing

WrathOfHan
Mayimbe and Germain Lussier hated this. I'm not sure I've ever seen the former dislike anything
somebody85
Read all the RT consensus and watched a few of the Youtube reviews. Sounds like it's going to be fun! A lot more excited for this then I was before Guardians. I'm really glad to hear that this movie isn't just a slasher with aliens. But yeah, I love hard R monster horror and it sounds like this delivers on that front. Can't wait. Edited May 7, 2017 by somebody85
