Will Smith's kids had nothing to do with it. The problem is that a.) the movie isn't that good and b.) the movie doesn't fit into a genre box ( Romance ? Comedy ? Action?) which made it difficult to market. The most telling statistics was that 88% of the audience was over 25. That's a good number for a Maggie Smith movie but not for a Will Smith movie. It is very rare for a movie to get wiped out with the under-25 crowd and still make a lot of money.

Because no one under 25 cares about Will Smith. His prime was 12-15 years ago and they hardly remember it.

No. Fresh Prince kills in syndication because of him. Tell me, if no one under 25 cares about Will Smith, why is Fresh Prince on MTV every afternoon? And ABC Family before that? Both channels cater to 14-25 year olds. Hell FB was even on Disney XD at some point. The under 25 crowd (like me) grew up with Fresh Prince and Will Smith's other work, we just dont care to see him in this type of role, and nobody cares to see AEarf.

Basically, about half of all frequent movie goers in the US/Canada are under the age of 24.  In the last 7 years the only movies Will Smith has made that anyone currently of that age would have seen is Hancock or MiB3.
