I was around then, no national fast food chains actually changed the name. I believe it was just a dumb political gesture on the U.S. Capitol commissary menu, and then it was picked up by some mom-n-pop restaurants. I never experienced it firsthand because I live in the San Francisco Bay Area. And the whole kerfuffle was over within a month at the most.

I honestly heard the phrase more from comedians like Jon Stewart using it mockingly, than I heard of it being used seriously. (And the likes of Stewart seemed to keep using the term for years, long after everybody else had forgotten and moved on. In Clerks II, it appears on a poster in Mooby's, and that was 2006, when even the people who would have used it in 2003 weren't using it anymore. Kevin Smith obviously thought he was still being clever to use it derisively...)

Y'all don't remember "freedom fries" and pouring all the French wine down drains during the early days of the Iraq War?

No, in the early days of the Iraq War all I remember was Saddam Hussein being involved with 9/11 and that Mesopotamia wanted to be democratic with freedom fries and was gonna be used as a model for the rest of Middle Earth thanks to media malpractice.  emot-colbert.gif

And who would waste great bottles of booz like that?  Lawdy.

French Fries or not, France was right, there was no WMD in Iraq and the second Iraq War is the most monumental geostrategic error of the US foreign policy of the 21 st century.

The Monster it created, ISIS, will maybe lead us to WWIII...

Smith hasn't been the biggest star for a few years now, Leonardo Dicaprio took that over and has widened the gap massively over #2 (RDJ but only as Iron Man?)

What kind of movies has he been in as of late? It seems to me if he's not in an all out balls to the wall action/comedy flick, then his movies aren't going to do so well. I think people just miss the wisecracking action movie star they fell in love with beginning with Independence Day.

I'm pretty sure nobody uses the word retarded in reference to those who are mentally handicapped anyways. It's evolved into a completely different meaning.

Honestly it's be more offensive to use the word in the context of a special needs person than as an insult.

For example, the word gay was never originally meant to mean homosexual,it was simply a different term for happy. Meanings and usages change, words become acceptable and non-acceptable and acceptable again through time.

In the end I think people shouldn't be looking at the words people use but the meaning behind what they are saying. Nobody had any meaning of being derogatory towards somebody with special needs and it was obvious. I understand certain people find different words offensive but the fact that a word used (not even the intent behind it) could offend so much is one of the problems with language.

It may just be me but I think the context and intent of what somebody said is way more important than the words themselves because the words themselves are simply a large combination of phonemes.

My Grandmother is still bent out of shape that she can't use the word "gay" to mean "happy" any more.   Now some people are upset that it is being used to mean "lame".   Can't stop language evolution.

There just aren't a lot of box office draws left. At the moment, famous characters are drawing more than famous actors and actresses. That's why studios concentrate so much on franchises. Those are the movies that the majority of people want to pay to see.

It's certainly an interesting trend. James Bond used to be the exception. Now, James Bond is becoming more like the template to follow.

I read that John Wayne was the top box office draw for 20 years in a row.   Wow....we won't see that again.

Who isn't convinced that foreign is way more important to a movies profitability these days? Fifty Shades domestic is collapsing but it's irrelevant due to the overwhelming overseas reception. You have to think low $100m TOTAL domestic on each of the two sequels but it won't matter when the WW gross locks in the huge gains the studio needs to justify rising costs.

That didn't seem to save Sony with Spider-Man.   (thank god)

Someone called Smith "bland".....Leo has always struck me that way.    I like him and all....but don't have a clue why he would be a huge BO draw.

Y'all don't remember "freedom fries" and pouring all the French wine down drains during the early days of the Iraq War?

I don't remember any of that.    Pouring wine into anything but a glass...followed by my throat does not compute.

It'll be fine, because it will make (either) close to (or) over 100M OS. So 150-160 WW will (at the very least) allow it to break even.

Will Smith movies used to not do just fine. They were big money makers that made everybody involved in his films richer than they were.
