But China is an expanding market so naturally the grosses will go up. I'm not saying it's not ridiculous how much money those movies are making there but it's not like America went all "nope, this is crap, we're not watching this anymore" either.

Thats kinda my point though.  In 10 years(maybe sooner) China is easily gonna be the biggest movie market in the world and it does matter what does really well there because if low effort and/or bad big budget movies like Transformers can do ridiculously high numbers there, then studios are gonna start pandering to that market because why refuse a license to print money.

Yeah if you could tone down the condescending attitude towards China, please.

Thx.

Every country has made bad movies giant box office hits, let s not try to pretend otherwise.

It'd be nice if some posters could drop their condescending attitudes towards America, but we all know that ain't happening.

Umm... America just made AS the biggest movie of 2013... so please let's not talk about mediocre movies in certain countries.

Lol, okay.

Yeah if you could tone down the condescending attitude towards China, please.

Thx.

Every country has made bad movies giant box office hits, let s not try to pretend otherwise.

I was just making a joke that wasn't even really "condescending" at all. More poking fun at another generally panned film being saved by China.

Well, I missed out on Chappie today, but I'm super curious to see it just to see what it's like because everyone's saying it's not what was advertised. That overseas box office is extremely disappointing, but BOM is saying there's still a lot of major markets left to open, so I'm staying optimistic and thinking this can still do 70M overseas.

As for Focus, there's no way it loses money now. 100M OS isn't looking like too too much of a stretch anymore, and it should make 3x it's budget worldwide, which means success.

China:

Transformers 2: 65m

Transformers 3: 165m (+100m)

Transformers 4: 301m (+136m)

US

Transformers 2: 402m

Transformers 3: 352m (-50m)

Transformers 4: 245m (-107m)

Exact opposite trend in both countries.  At this rate, the next Transformers movie will make 150-200m in the US and 400m+ in China.

Without mentioning details like see beneath, this seems incomplete enough to arise a wrong image about China

But China is an expanding market so naturally the grosses will go up. I'm not saying it's not ridiculous how much money those movies are making there but it's not like America went all "nope, this is crap, we're not watching this anymore" either.

Yes, but I'd add some examples, expansion is relative and why it might ompact the numbers in such a strong way might be for some readers not living there not be on their radar. Not a critizm!

Way sooner. Think ~ 2020. This year for the 1st time a month was bigger than the US' BO = Februaty

China still builds ~ 2000 cinemas per year

Including in regions... they never had a cinema or hadn't had a 3D able cinema

So what do people who pay in relation to their income a lot to try it out?

At least some try to pick a movie (or a few) that will allow them to see the effects in the most possivle way = not counting for all GA in China.

Transformers 4 had also Hong Kong and China situated parts in their story (even if not filmed there mostly) = that detail impacts the Chinese BO usually a lot.

For future releases:

Chinese governments tends to give more and more bad release dates for expected extremer high earners, and...

Exchange rates also play a big role in the seemingly big success or decrease of movie series or...

What kind of exchange rate will be at the time of a (if there is) a new Transformer...???

Depending on the economy,... there: there might be more people able to pay for tickets and wish to do so than nowadays, that might be a opoint in favor for an increase. But economy is ~ fickle.

WOM is rather very important in China, IMHO more than in the US, especially as the movies are only allowed for a limited time period to be shown. Quality of advertising material seems to have a bigger impact than we might be used to

= I'd sugggest to not count on the kind of increases you seem to expect, it is still possible, but I think the reality might be another one. Depemds also a  lot on in how many years from now on the release will be, see e.g. new theaters per year.

Lol, Chappie and especially JA flopped in the US because they didn't look appealing and ended up critically panned, this isn't hard to figure out.

Im quite proud at how Transformers is doing in the UK

TF1 $47M

TF2 $44M

TF3 $45M

TF4 $33M

Excellent analysis. The OS market is so dependent on a number of factors that it's hard to predict.
