What's the worst sequel to a great movie?

Recommended Posts

Speed 2: Cruise Control. Hurl.

The clear winner is Highlander 2. It was so bad that when they made a third they pretended the 2nd never existed.

Both of these and I know I'm in the minority on this one, but Batman Returns was big letdown to me personally.

I've heard that The Santa Clause 3 was terrible, though I've never seen it.

(I've seen The Santa Clause 2 on TV once or twice when I had nothing to do and there was nothing else on, it's pretty meh but it's not actually that BAD.)

Oh, and I can't believe nobody has brought up Star Trek V yet. That is the one original-cast Trek movie I always skip (I've even watched The Motion Picture more times than V).

Even the special effects in V are terrible (and I mean Superman IV terrible), and the Trek movies have otherwise always looked good no matter what their other flaws.

Spiderman 3 for a film coming off a truly great film.

Trying to think of one that hasn't been mentioned yet (that I noticed), how about Blair Witch: Book of Shadows?

I was thinking the same thing.  Book of Shadows has to take it.

Off top of my head:

Jaws 3

Spider-Man 3

Shriek 3

Jewel of nile

Major league 3

Die hard 5

Speed 2

Spider-Man 3 is not bad, just because the lack of romance, but has more action.

This is in fact my most favorite Raimi Spidey movie.

Given it needs to be sequel to a great movie (I'm also only counting the movie directly after the great movie, disqualifying films like Superman 4 because 3 sucked)

Obvious ones are

JP2

Iron Man 2

Superman 3

Jaws 2

Indiana Jones 4

Phantom Menace

Matrix Reloaded

Godfather 3

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Halloween 2

Die Hard 2

The Hangover 2

Dumb and Dumber To

Terminator 3

Spidey 3

TDKR

Caddy shack 2

A more interesting question is good sequels to bad movies

There's

Star Trek 2

Fast 5

Ghost Protocol

Revenge of the Sith

I can think of no more

Good sequels to bad movies? IMO, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was not BAD so much as mediocre. I guess Star Trek II qualifies though.

Star Trek VI would definitely qualify, because Star Trek V was genuinely bad.

Also IMO, Revenge of the Sith only seems better in comparison to Menace and (especially) Clones. I honestly don't think it's any better, we were just fooled (or perhaps more accurately, fooled ourselves) into thinking it was for that summer, because we WANTED it to be. I know that's how it was with me.

Terminator Salvation (I love the first three, yes, even T3,. This one was putrid.)

Matrix Revolutions (Reloaded is my favorite actually, but Revolutions is just blegh)

Transformers 4 (First three are decent to really good, this one was just mehhhhh, yawnnn, zzzzzz)

Jurassic Park III (Love to death the original, Lost World was great)

Alien 3 (they kill off our Newt and Hicks five minutes into the film, WTF)

Final Destination 4 (pure shit, but love the other four)

Pirates of the Caribbean - On Stranger Tides (Huge fan of the original trilogy, my favorite is actually AWE, but this one is just a big whatever in all aspects)
