Disney machine can't launch anything outside Animation, Pixar, Marvel (and SW)

So youre saying Disney couldnt turn Hostel 3 into a 100 million dollar movie?

Pacific Rim had the most laughable marketing campaign ever. It's fucking amazing that it managed to open as high as it did.

Pac Rim marketing accurately depicted and presented the movie that GDT made.

PR's marketing campaign was awful besides the final trailer that was released one week before the movie.

What I find interesting about the Tomorrowland campaign is that they didn't attach the 6 minute IMAX preview for all IMAX prints of AoU. That was the least they could have done IMO. And many theaters did not even show the Tomorrowland trailer before AoU.

This seems like it'll be one of those times where people blame the marketing even though the movie itself is the problem

Like Pac Rim

There was nothing wrong with Pacific Rim. The marketing WAS the problem. They didn't even start running TV ads until less than two weeks before release and waited until the end to put out a trailer that finally showed a hint at the plot or human element.

I still remember the debates about whether there were any daytime fights in the movie or not. They designed so many cool looking robots and monsters and then hide them fighting with nighttime and rain. Not that it might have made much of a difference but at least Transformers shows the robots off in brightly lit fights.

They put that shit in front of Mad Max in IMAX 3D over here and the best they could have done was not even release that thing. Such a waste of 6 minutes. Not the type of scene you should use. There is nothing impressive about it. It is just a normal escape scene.

Clooney might not be to blame but hes not exactly a name that gets people to come out.

(adjusted)

The Perfect Storm: 62.3 / 275.1

Ocean's Eleven: 54.7 / 260.4

Ocean's Twelve: 51.2 / 163.0

Ocean's Thirteen: 42.6 / 138.3

Gravity: 55.8 / 274.1

Sure, he hasn't had a huge amount of hits, but he is very much an A-list star and one of the most famous actors in the world.

Disney machine can't launch anything outside Animation, Pixar, Marvel (and SW)

Pirates of the Caribbean, Maleficent, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Narnia, Pearl Harbor and Armageddon, National Treasure, Tron Legacy all did great, and none of those are animated or Marvel.

I could name dozens more if you want.

Pacific Rim marketing was fine. The only way it would have made more money is if it had a big star

Del Toro originally wanted Tom Cruise in the film but he turned it down :( it would have made a lot more if it had Tom, but oh well. A sequel is happening so let's not worry too much.

Edited by tree - we're home

The SF attack and Sydney fight were daytime, and cities look cool at night. It helped the aesthetic of the film.

Totally understandable they pushed Elba as a lead in the marketing. The girl and Hunnam were shit.

You can keep Hunman for all I care but you leave Mako alone.

So they showing off Charlie Hunnam and high pitched scientist guy in the trailer more would have made the movie do better at the box office??? Lol you guys

The human element of the marketing was Elba, Day and Perlman. It says a lot about the true leads

Almost everybody in the film industry thinks that Pacific Rim had a lousy campaign. Every most of the film's fans admit that.
