Universal’s mystery-drama “The Girl on the Train,” starring Emily Blunt, is likely to lead the weekend with as much as $30 million — though one tracking service placed its estimate closer to $18 million.

Universal has not disclosed how many theaters it has booked for “The Girl on the Train.”

Isn't it hard to estimate if you don't know how many theaters will be booked?

Not sure about this at the box office. That marketing lately just looks so much like Gone Girl I feel like it could have a very been there done that vibe to the GA

The marketing is playing up the spicier elements because they know the more depressing material that dominates the novel re: Blunt's character won't be attractive to many.

The book sold well enough that the advertising can probably afford to ape Gone Girl and audiences will still turn up. Furthermore, filmlover's right about the difficulty of selling Blunt's character as written in the novel.

Spoiler

Even though the story is still primarily a murder mystery, the fact that Universal is very seriously downplaying the protagonist's alcoholism reminds me of Paramount's efforts on the same front with Flight. That being said, I'm guessing that audiences will swallow this trickery more easily with this film because it's a murder mystery that just happens to have a drunk protagonist, not a character study about alcoholism that just happens to have a spectacular plane crash.
