RTH said in the Estimates thread about Compton:

Low doesnt mean non existent. Madeas Christmas didnt even play here. Maybe the bump wont be huge but it should do something.

SOC is paving its own path. Finding a film like it opening in mid to late August is hard. There have been a few biopics released during this time of year, even some featuring black acts, but none of those were R rated. The closest R rated film featuring black leads I can find is Four Brothers from 10 years ago, but that was not a biopic with built-in interest. And so much has changed in 10 years. The only thing certain about SOC's next few days/weeks is that nothing is certain.

With a $7.5 million Monday and at least $7.5-8 million on Tuesday (probably closer to $8.5-9.5 million), I don't see how Compton does any less than $25 million this weekend. It's definitely locked for $20 million+ 2nd weekend now, since it's shown no real signs of major frontloading.

Could go as high as $34-35 million for its 2nd weekend, assuming $28-29 million weekdays.

Forbes Summer Box Office Recap:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmendelson/2015/08/18/summer-2015-box-office-wrap-up-avengers-sized-hits-but-fantastic-four-sized-bombs/?utm_campaign=yahootix&partner=yahootix

Agree 100% on the "Superhero Fatigue" we've seen this summer. Also confirms what we all knew already that Summer 2015 was the summer of Disney and Universal.

I really don't have high hopes for Steve Jobs. Which is too bad, because I like a lot of the people involved with it, but I just can't see Fassbender as Jobs, and I don't know how interested I am in seeing a movie about Jobs that doesn't even get to the iPhone launch.

Everest though, looks amazing. And I think it will be another one with strong reviews and word of mouth. I'd like to see it do Perfect Storm like numbers (adjusted, of course), but it's releasing in late September, not early June.

But in terms of the rough three-act structure of his life, he was already way on top by the time of the iPhone launch. He exploded into stardom with the original Mac, crashed and burned with NeXT, and resurrected Apple from the dead with the iMac. It makes a lot of sense to focus on those three points in time.

Well if FORBE'S is bitching about the Superhero Fatigue Now, wait'll next summer for heaven sakes..

Worth reading.   The sarcasm is pretty good:

"The funniest part of the summer, hands down, was watching all of the pundits scream “Superhero fatigue!!!”  at the shameful and pathetic performance of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Stan Lee wept and Thanos cheered as the superhero sequel opened with a ghastly $191 million debut weekend, the third best on record, and ended up with a domestic take of only $457 million! Galactus cackled with glee as the terribly reviewed blockbuster (74% on Rotten Tomatoes) had to settle for $1.4 billion worldwide on a $250m budget. Meanwhile, Ant-Man is failing all the way to around $170m domestic (nearly 3x the horrifying $57m opening weekend) and a bit under $400m worldwide before it even hits China and Japan next month. Coupled with the crowd pleasing sizzle reel offered for Captain America: Civil War at the D23 expo this weekend, it is clear that Marvel is in a bad place right now and may just have to give up and sell the rights Iron Man, Captain America, and the Hulk back to Marvel."
