Racism is terrible, sexism is terrible, and I'd be happy to throw a stone (metaphorically) at anyone who attacked Tran personally. Fuck those people.

Ok. Obvious stuff out of the way? Great.

Recently an Overwatch female character was launched that was super overpowered. There was a ruckus online and a lot of fans protesting. What did Blizzard do? Did they say "oh you Overwatch fans just hate strong women?" Did they carefully target BasementDweller69 on Twitter with his 41 followers and call him a white supremacist bigot? No, they nerfed the overpowered character and balanced the gameplay and engaged the majority of fans and said "we'll fix it, we're sorry, we won't let this happen again. The toxicity died quickly. That's good business. That's good box office.

Yes Kathleen Kennedy should have come out and said "we'll fix it, we'll remove her from The Last Jedi, it won't happen again" and then re-edited the film and fixed it for all future versions, Lucas-style.

Also just a word of warning, writing your posts as if you're writing an editorial for a newspaper just looks really daft. FYI.

They could have come out honest and straight forward and say that they aimed for representation (same way Dr. Who creator did) and address the concern that the movie was not up to standards story wise.

Instead they chose to attack the character of everyone that did not like the movie, deflect all criticism as a product of bigotry and incite even more controversy. How is that not stupid to you?

You honestly expect a producer to come out and say publicly regarding one of their contracted employees that they only hired her because she's Chinese?

I don't disagree with you but it is not the same as a game where everything has been created artificially, this is talking about actual people

She's not Chinese, she's American. And if you're referring to her heritage that would be Vietnamese.

Keeping your fans happy has fuck-all to do with your franchise making money? :WHATanabe:

Your example to a star wars movie would be akin to Kelly Marie Tran being the only one properly centered in the frames she is in while all other characters have their foreheads and legs below knees cut off during close ups for no explicable reason. Comparing a game mechanic to a story choice is not exactly something that makes a whole lot of sense.

Also most of the fan baiting is been done by B grade web-news portals who are triggering people for clicks. The others on twitter are some random authors of some EU novels - Warner Brothers can't censor JK Rowling when she goes on a politically charged twitter tirade just because they own the rights to her cinematic adaptations (in fact she is now a credited employee of WB as a screenwriter for Fantastic Beasts pentology), why would Lucas film be able to control the twitter tirades of some random EU authors? Any other twitter rebukes -Ryan Johnson, Boyega etc have been extremely neutered. Web portals are releasing commentary OPeds and people are conveniently ascribing it to LF media crowd control to further their reverse outrage.

Lucas film would be really stupid hiring an actress of Vietnamese heritage if their aim was to pander to Chinese audiences through her. Your argument makes no sense.

That's not what I meant. LE was saying she's there for diversity , which I agree she is, but company is not going to say "We hired Tran because she is a [woman/asian/diversity]"

I don't think too many fans were dissatisfied in ROTS during the last half when the senate chambers and Jedi temple were assaulted

What a surprise opinion, from someone who has the jedi library as their profile picture.

LF don't even  need to say it though.. It was pretty obvious from the start that they were trying to make head-way into Asian markets which was their weakest region by far.

Casting a Japanese actor might get them appeal in south east Asia but not China and Korea, Chinese only appeal to Chinese and famous Korean actors have the chance to breakout in much of east Asia. If Lucas film really thinks putting some person with "mongoloid" features is going to generate some cross appeal is bizarre. Will a Bollywood movie gain mass appeal in the US because they typecast some Swedish white guy for a side roll? The whole argument is preposterous.

Well yeah, its a studio run by a bunch of white people who know nothing about Asia or their regional politics. Duh.

This

Studios should stop trying to gain appeal in Asia by hiring some random asian. It's embarrassing.

Look how enormous IW is in Asia with absolute zero asian in it.

Asians don't face racism like black people in the US. We're the majority here. We actually prefer some good-looking white people on the screen :P

You want the SW franchise to fail because you want Avatar to take it's place.

It’s already dead, we’re just doing the autopsy. I thought it would be straightforward because SW has bullet wounds to the back of the head, but people still have other theories they say demand investigation.

There's so many issues going in Asia re: beauty and white-ness that are just not going to be evident to some random white American studio exec too. If you take a few moments to study Asian cinema and stars... but they don't. And people should remember that Asians in Asia have their own movies/blockbuster to watch every week so they don't "lack" for representation at all. They're looking to American cinema to give them something different from what their own film industry can offer and yes, pretty white people is part of that lol.
