Star Wars: The Force Awakens

 

 

 

 

 

Another franchise revitalization from 2015 and another 7th part from 2015 to make this list. The Force Awakens brought Star Wars back to the forefront of the movies as THE Franchise. JJ Abrams cribbed from A New Hope and gave the fans everything they wanted. This is proven in the amazing box office run it had and the great reactions from fans and the general public alike. A great phenomenon in the end.

It's fun, it's exciting, it has heart and a warmth to it that was sorely missing in the prequels, it has the tone and the physical look and feel of old Star Wars, as opposed to the shitty artificial videogame visuals of the prequels, with their boring overwhelming plastic CG. The cinematography is beautiful (there are some gorgeous shots in there). The action scenes are top-notch and don't feel over-the-top like in the prequels. The new characters are mostly great, although, in my opinion, none of them, with the possible exception of Rey (who steals the show), will become as iconic as, say, a Han Solo or Darth Vader. Kylo Ren is pretty cool tho. Also, there's real chemistry between the characters.

 

I think one of JJ's biggest accomplishments, however, which I didn't think he would be able to pull off, is recapturing the spirit of Star Wars. Some of my favorite moments are the ones early on with Rey () alone on Jakku, scavenging and just trying to get by. It is in those moments that I feel the movie truly captures that sense of adventure and wonder being just over the horizon, of longing to matter and be someone.

 

On the negative side, story-wise it's not very original (the plot is too similar to A New Hope), and there are a few too many winks to the past. The movie also feels a bit rushed.
 
At the end of the day it's great entertainment, it brings Star Wars back with a bang and wipes away the bad taste left by the prequels. I'd say it's on par with Jedi, perhaps even better.
 
Pending between 8.5 and 9/10.

Mad Max: Fury Road

 

 

 

The forum's choice for #1 of the year. The movie that gave us plenty of great moments and featured George Miller pretty much showing up much younger directors and schooling them on how to stage an action sequence. This movie was everything we waited for and more. I can't say much more about it that hasn't already been said. So let's just say

9/10 joint MOTY. Pure spectacle and bombast and some of the most holy f- action I've seen on screen but where Miller blows everyone out is building a strong and convincing enough emotional core and connection to the characters and the cause that it ends up being so satisfying emotionally too. The SCALE blew me away, this is a different beast to The Road Warrior. Hardy was very cool, but Theron and Hoult owned this - which especially atory wise was the main and only flaw. Heart pumping from first shot to last.-

Good top 10, my only issues are in the 20s and thought it was going off the rails way too early, but the list really made up for it around #13 (or #11 times 3)
