88TH ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS Discussion Topic (LIVE! Today's discussion begins on pg 33)

Honestly don't really care about the See You Again snub. The melody is very derivative of some past hits, and the lyrics I always felt were trying too hard to tug the heartstrings without much genuine effort. Hard to feel genuine when your song sounds like it was made in a factory for the sole purpose of being a number one smash hit. Kind of like if Roar by Katy Perry had been in a movie and got nominated.

Still think Big Short is our winner? Got everywhere it was supposed to but 5 does make me a little nervous.

Revenant wpuld normally ally be the front runner but AGI won last year and Spotlight missed too many guilds elsewhere to build momentum I think.

big short got all the necessaries with directing/acting/writing/editing. only other movie to do that is spotlight. though it might just be a weird year and revenant wins. I could see it just sweeping through the techs. between those 3 definitely.

Oscars are probably about to get another #OscarsSoWhite backlash.

I can't blame them though, unlike last year where I just thought it was a coincidence.  There were many great black performance this year, many of them much better than a few of these nominees, and they were all snubbed.  They could have at least nominated Elba over Hardy Or any of Smith/Jackson/Jordan over freaking Redmayne.

Like every year, they have some pretty terrible nominations in context (and some good ones too).

Did the lack of screenplay nom hurt The Revenant BP chances? Titanic was the last one to win without it.

before titanic you'd have to go back 50 years to sound of music. both the biggest movies of all-time at the time. it's very rare which is one of the factors making me unsure about the revenant. i mean even the artist got a screenplay nod JUST because it was the frontrunner.

I think it seems like the one the Academy would go for. Unless they do go for The Revenant or Mad Max, but to me those have bigger hurdles to overcome.

In that case I guess Bridge of Spies is the frontrunner too (since it's even more Oscar catnip than The Big Short is). ;)
