Dang, although 9.6m is better than I originally projected its a slight disappointment after hearing 10-11m

So

Fri: 9.6m

Sat: 15.4m

Sun: 10.8m

Wknd: 35.8m

About on track with what I was thinking.

did anyone for real think it was gonna hit 40 this weekend?

No.  Most expectations were $33 - 37M.  I just had lofty expectations because I really want it to beat Shrek 2's third weekend gross of $37,931,716.  It has a real chance of defeating the gross but $40,000,000 is such a nice, round number... :D:P

Curiously enough, The Identical didn't, I'm surprised it didn't lose more theaters:

It wasn't released by a major or "mini-major" (Weinstein, Open Road, etc.) studio.

Finally saw "Eye In The Sky" last night. More tense and suspenseful than I expected. It keeps the very complex subject of drone warfare simple and easy for an audience to follow. A couple of heavy-handed moments but otherwise very engrossing. Check it out.

So Allegiant held incredibly strong for the very late shows last night, but still underwhelmed here with 11.2M, which isn't just disappointing considering it's below the domestic BO, but YA films can usually do 30-50% stronger here than usual.

Why do YA films do better there?
