Looks like I HEAVILY overestimated TMNT2's numbers.

I don't understand why its opening would drop over 50% from the first one's.

Mostly due to market saturation, I suppose. Although there's no single juggernaut playing at the moment, there are just so many major would-be blockbusters out there at the moment that they are all doing damage to each other. This is going to continue throughout the summer.

So it'll take till Friday for XM:A to hit $100m domestic then.

Is $200m out of the question, even if it had to crawl to that mark.

It would need over a 3x multiplier.  Even with DOFP's multiplier it would reach only the mid $160s

With all the sequels underperforming will the "age of franchises" end soon, with only the gigantic brands like Star Wars surviving?

The trend will have to become far more dire. Fox, WB and Marvel are still have a lot of success. I mean, it's not like BvS and Civil War didn't do pretty well. Maybe X-Men not so much but it'll still easily gross $550M+ WW.  It's highly unlikely that Justice League, Fantastic Beasts, Infinity Wars, Deadpool 2, Guardians 2, Kingsman 2, etc. don't perform very, very well. Or, I should say, well enough. So... I say it's unlikely.

Unless the joke went over my head?

Angry Birds made 10.5M in China today. Movie is doing fucking well for itself. Might watch it tonight.

It looks like it is headed to around a 400M WW finish in the end.

I was at McDonalds yesterday and they had a sign up saying that the Angry Birds happy meal toys were sold out, the demand was definitely there for sure.

The lower tier franchises will definitely take big hits. One thing becoming clearer is that studios want a continuing series where they can get plenty of sequels out of it but they aren't willing to greenlight the first movie in order to get there. And the only first movies greenlighted are ones based on pre-existing IPs no matter how dumb (The Emoji Movie)

And people wonder why animated features are so big.
