Outstanding for DB - probably heading for low 20's OW.  Wasn't sure it could cross $20m with the R-rating and being in a trash dump weekend, but this is a well-reviewed film that has really been buzzing this week.

Don't Breathe is the only saving this weekend from being a trash dump weekend. Next weekend's new releases seem destined to make little.

Lionsgate Premiere has the distributor’s 11th Jason Statham movie this weekend, the sequel Mechanic: Resurrection which is poised to bank between $7M-$9M grossed $390K at 1,800 locations last night. Statham’s previous non-ensemble feature for Lionsgate, 2012’s Safe, loaded a $7.9M opening and a final cume of $17.1M.

Fantastic start for Don't Breathe

Horror  - Summer 2016:

The Conjuring 2 $320m

The Purge: Election Year $102.4m so far

The Shallows $85m so far

Lights Out $111m so far

and now Don't Breathe is having a big #1 opening.

Great stuff.

MR will make bank overseas.  I don't think they really care what it makes here

Lionsgate sold the rights. So they care.

Summer 2017 has Annabelle 2 and Flatliners.

Surely more will be added closer to the time.

I think Annabelle should move to June or July.

But why would the expect anything more than about 15 million from this film here?

MOJO

FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Screen Gems and Stage 6 Films' Don't Breathe brought in $1.875 million from Thursday night screenings in ~2,500 theaters. This is just ahead of the $1.8 million Lights Out brought in on Thursday night before opening with $21.6 million and well ahead of the $1.02 million The Visit brought in last September before opening with $25.4 million. It's also 2.2x more than Sinister 2 brought in last August before opening with $10.5 million.

Lionsgate's Mechanic: Resurrection delivered $390,000 from 1,800 locations a number comparable to the $375,000 brought in by The Transporter Refueled last September before it went on to open with $7.35 million. Another good comparison is last year's Hitman: Agent 47 which brought in $600,000 last August before opening with $8.3 million.

Very good start for Don't Breathe! Horror is at its peak this summer. It could throw in between $20-$25 million for the weekend which is very solid. Bad but expected for The Mechanic:Ressurection, a sequel no one asked for to a remake that wasn't well-liked. Jason Statham isn't box office $$$ like Stallone, Schwarzenngger, or even Bruce Willis between the 25-30 my ear gap at the box office.
