Black Adam | October 21, 2022 | New Line | Don't worry, it's a hit. Dwayne Johnson says so!

Recommended Posts

Here's the issue with Black Adam I've had from the beginning. The casting was great for the role but Black Adam is a character I'd say maybe 10% of people know about.

He's Shazam's arch-villain and I suppose WB had plans to make him the big bad for the entirety of this DCEU phase despite Darkseid being right there for the taking and a far more popular big bad for the entire DC Cinematic Universe to face.

Black Adam being a villain for the most part and an unknown just to me screams bad box office performance simply on the fact there's no notoriety.

Spoiler

I think this film would work if the HC mini appearance was an actual solid role because that alone would sell the movie

Superman vs Black Adam, everyone would watch that film.

Asking general audience however to go watch an unknown villain facing off against a Justice Society comprising of no one of name value to anyone that did not read the comics or watch Justice League cartoon is a hard sell IMO.

Bottom line is you gotta start somewhere, I agree with you about black adam not being a top tier character but dc has already done the big guns so why not try and build out a bit more, and if anyone can a sell a character it will be the rock. I just wish they didn’t go so big with the budge. Also, I’m not saying this is gonna do big numbers or anything but they should just keep building out and stick to the plan(if they actually have one).

If they can make consistent crowd pleasers then people will want to see more of the characters.

Who are the biggies exactly?

I'd assume Variety, Hollywood Reporter and Collider?

Collider

He spent 10 years getting ready for this role and he literally kills anyone and everyone in his way and I loved that he didn't pull back on who Black Adam is. DC’s #BlackAdam ROCKS! Tons of action, characters you’re instantly invested in & terrific pacing. Dwayne Johnson finds a great balance in being menacing & badass, but also empathetic. Especially loved Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman & Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate. More JSA movies please! There is some really excellent world building in this film - some of the best we’ve seen from DC. Comic book films that have momentum, emotion and a strong layered mythology are always the most entertaining to me. #BlackAdam also left me wanting more, which is what you want imo - Erik Davis, New Yorker

.

@TheRock is terrific in #BlackAdam, which includes a hearty amount of real world touchstones (most affecting is it reinforces the need for heroes in bleak times). Director Juame Collet-Serra lays out building blocks for a larger, grand universe. Action is lively & BIG in scale. - Variety

Have seen #BlackAdam. @TheRock is fantastic as Black Adam. He spent 10 years getting ready for this role and he literally kills anyone and everyone in his way and I loved that he didn't pull back on who Black Adam is. Left the theater wanting to see the sequel immediately. - Steven Weintraub, Collider

After over a decade, #BlackAdam is here and it kicks ass! A visual spectacle from start to finish, I was never bored.

@TheRock was born to play this character and the supporting cast, especially @PierceBrosnan, deliver. This is one of DC's coolest movies and I want more ASAP! - Big Screen Leaks

#BlackAdam is built on some epic, non-stop action. It made me want a sequel with a smoother story immediately. When it moves, it’s a straight shot of adrenaline. The characters are dope, especially Teth-Adam and Doctor Fate. It’s a bad-ass film. - Brandon Davis

#BlackAdam is DC's most action-packed film to date. It's a non-stop thrill ride that is all about spectacle, and it knows it. Ther3 is barely anytime to breath, or even talk. @TheRock is a perfect Black Adam, plus Pierce Brosnon is a standout. The film will leave fans buzzing! - Ben Rolf, Discussing Film

Black Adam is everything that I hoped it would be and more. A Snyder-esque antihero spectacle that delivers big action and impressive set pieces. Dwayne Johnson transforms into Black Adam, a role that he was born to play. Centineo & Swindell are so damn fun to watch. #BlackAdam - Scott Menzel, HCA Critics

BLACK ADAM is an action-packed crowd pleaser, @TheRock is at the top of his game. Doctor Fate and Hawkman are standouts and the JSA fleshes out the DC universe. The surprise everyone’s been waiting for definitely delivers, and it will get fans excited for the future. #BlackAdam - Sheraz Farooqi, Cinema Debate

I have seen #BlackAdam! This was one of my most anticipated films of the year, and it did not disappoint. The action sequences were incredible, especially the ones with the JSA. The Rock crushes it as Black Adam. The film’s end left me with high hopes for the future of the DCEU. - Dorian Perks, Geeks of Color

Just seen Black Adam okay DC stepping up! boys was boxing ONG - Mark Philips, RDC

Don’t all studios do that?

I just hadn't seen it before I have seen the generic critic quotes used in a promo but not retweeting the specific social media reactions. Then again that is most likely just ignorance on my part than actually being a novel thing.

It does provide a convenient place to see reviews.

These people are handpicked to hype the movie. That's why I worry. If some of those people are saying bad things, imagine the likes of David Ehrlich getting their hands on it.

I mean who knows how anyone is gonna react to any movie, there’s been some peoples reactions who I expected to rip this actually say it’s good and fun. The scores are gonna be what the scores are.

Regarding reactions, seems like reviews will be mixed as even though almost all have said it's "fun" or whatever, that usually spells doom because I'm sure a ton will say the story is bad. So I will be pleasantly surprised by a 60+ on RT. Expecting somewhere closer to 50 with the positives to praise the action/the Rock/etc, but almost all will probably trash the story.
