THE THREAD OF THE FURIOUS: Friday #s (DHD, Pg 36) F8 45.5M, BB 6.6M, BATB 5.3M, Smurfs 2.9M, GIS 2.1M

Where is this 5 pm start you speak of?! I'm in a major city and there weren't any showings earlier than 7, as per usual. The 10 pm IMAX was by far the biggest of the year. Beauty had 4 people total, LEGO Batman had 3, Furious had about 75 people. It was huge in IMAX compared to anything else this year where I am and I usually am attending the same time shows. I did see Logan Sunday night at 10 instead of preview night and it was busy too, maybe 30-40, very impressive. I guess some movies just do better in IMAX. Ghost did way better here than Beauty it seemed like - they couldn't wait to ditch Beauty. I think family films just don't convince many people to spend $20/ticket lol

No BOGO deals or big discounts from Fandango or Atom yet in April (vs all of the BOGO and extra discount and even free ticket deals for the March movies).  Could that be a big difference in what we see for big movies in April vs March?  BOGOs bring out families and groups who otherwise might wait for Netflix...

I know people used to say it had little effect and no one redeemed thse deals...but deals directly on the ticket buying sites have to be more used than other ones...

10.4

Quote

2nd Update, Friday AM: The numbers are in and Universal is calling The Fate of the Furious’ Thursday night at $10.4M at 3,310 theaters. ComScore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak reports that the pic received an 88% overall positive score, which is quite close to the 89% score that Furious 7 received, and under the 90% that Fast & Furious 6 earned.

I would imagine the multi is going to be a bit better than F7, maybe because there was more fevered anticipation for F7, but doesn't seem like a great start domestically.

The same multi as F7 gets it to 96.7M for the weekend and 44.2M today.

We could have a case where China OW is Over US Dom - Insane.

US Dom could be about 225 if it does 96 ow and 2.35x, and China OW could beat that.
