The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

@grim22 Since you have access to the old thread, can you pprovide a comparison about where Pets was on MT at the same time that Despicable Me is now?

Pets wasn't showing up on Pulse and MT much, leading to, as it often happens, our forum turning on it and declaring it a flop before a single cent was in the bank

80M is still possible but it needs to pick up the presales - soon.

Errrrrr..... <_<

Make no mistake, it's picking up.  But for something that should be selling at a brisk clip now, it just looks soft to me.

It'll do huge on walkups, yes, before anyone makes that observation.  But breakout?  Well, warning signs are starting to flash.  Still plenty of time for it to reverse course.  But if it does open under expectations, it won't be completely unexpected.

I am optimistic about ghostbusters, trek, bourne and of course Suicide Squad. Its going to be amazing next 4-5 weeks.

On Pets, its going to do great. But expectations are out of control. Its not a sequel and the product does not attract adults here. Illumination has had amazing success but opening an original to blockbuster numbers is not easy. Especially opening 3 weeks after a blockbuster in the same genre. I think 60-70m range is likely and that is a great number.

I wonder if the huge tracking for The Secret Life of Pets was inflated by the fact it's been promoted for more than a year now. I'm glad it's finally coming out so the marketing can go away at last (I swear, every single bit trailer and ad has ended with the "death metal" bit).

Aka, slow Fandango and MT sales ;)

MT:

SLOP 21.8

Dory 21.7

Tarzan 10.3

Purge 9.8

BFG 8.5

Pulse:

1. SLOP

2. Dory

3. Purge

4. Tarzan

5. SLOP 3D

At this point I'm basically expecting something between 70 and 80M for SLOP; presales have picked up but nothing indicates it's "breaking out"

On 7/6/2016 at 6:28 PM, WrathOfHan said:

70-80M has always been expected but quite a bit of people are going higher than that with some even hitting 100M, so 70-80M wouldn't really be a breakout in this case

And of course, said people will cry "oh what a horrible flop" when it doesn't match their unrealistic expectations (while still doing massively, of course). Like clockwork.

The IIlumination hate is so apparent in this forum.

I guess that bodes well for DM3 opening over 100m.

It is a more well know property and thus it should be more pre sales driven but still it seems to be doing wayyy better than Pets did.

To caution myself, I agree with you - Pets was an original 1st time property, while DM3 is a sequel, so it should have more built-in presales...still think it's gonna be huge:)...

Got time to grab one local for DM3 tonight (this local has practically sold out tomorrow's cheap show, so it's selling for matinees here...less at night yet)...

2 screens, 1 3d and 1 2d, 2 showings

2d in 200 seat theater - 112/400

3d in 60 seat theater - 24/120

Earlier showings obviously selling better (1st 2d is about 1/2 sold)...

Just did a quick check for SMH and holy shit.....this thing is gonna be huge. Like I mean real huge. It already has quite a few near sell outs for next weekend.

To compare....it's selling similar to how Suicide Squad and GOTG2 sold in the philly area. I wouldn't be shocked one bit if this thing hits $130M right now.

Ill do a more detailed one for you guys early next week.
