Tonight at my theater:

Sgt. Stubby: 0/78

7:00 Rampage: 39/78

Isle of Dogs: 2/78

Truth or Dare: 2/78

8:15 Rampage 3D: 1/78

That seems...pretty horrible for everything except that first Donkey Kong showing.

Yeah, and even with that I'm fairly positive there was a group sale of around 10-12 people based on where it was at last night. We'll see if it can top Pacific Rim's previews.

Sales for Rampage have been on par with Pacific Rim 2 around me. Starting to think it's gonna open in about the same range.

I would assume a sequel like PR2 would be more pre-sales heavy, but genre being so similar I could be wrong.

Is it just me or are people avoiding 3D more now?

My theater is only giving Rampage two 3D showtimes a day between its two screens this weekend (one at 10:30 in the morning and the other at 6). I don't know why studios keep putting movies out in that format. It's obvious no one really goes to them anymore unless they are event movies (and even those don't play to close to sold out showings).

It is a clear trend domestic:

3d was 21% of the BO at is 2010 peak, down to 14-15% in 2015 and big sudden decline since:

International audience has a different relation with 3ds I think, so the 3d version will be made for them and will already exist, so does the screen 3d able in domestic theater, probably the only reason non-event movie get them (when there is not an new event movie currently playing)

Alita and The Lion King are probably the only movies coming out until Avatar that will push 3D hard. Studios saturated the market way too much.

And saturated it with movies that did nothing with the gimmick. Also crap post conversions.

That's the biggest problem imo. People are tired of paying extra for 3D and getting nothing out of their money for it, it's just disgusting.

Honestly, what recent movie actually did something cool with its 3D version? I'll be surprised if people can give me more 5 or 6 good examples from the last couple of years.

Audience has simply learned that it's not worth it.

The last 3D movie I remember being genuinely wowed by was The Book of Life. Guardians 1 was fine, and I can't remember if I saw Jupiter Ascending in 3D.

I also have to wonder about some of the projection equipment being used for certain theaters; I know when I saw The Jungle Book in 3D, it was dark and unenjoyable, and I was done with 3D after that. I've never heard anyone say "It's gotten better,".

I'm in the minority but The Hobbit trilogy in HFR 3D was incredible.

A lot of digital projectors are aging and I suspect once more cinemas switch to Laser projectors, 3D will see an untick but I think we need more films like Gravity or Life of Pi where the film maker have 3D in mind.

The last two movies I saw in 3D had horrible conversions (Black Panther and Geostorm). There were also some movies I saw in 3D last year that had very supbar effects (LEGO Batman, Kong, The Mummy). Hopefully IW has some good 3D because that was the only IMAX time that was convenient.

I don't know about The Last Knight but you are right on the money about the others. I watched them 3D as well and they were pretty good experiences. I think the last Star Trek was also good in 3D? But that's pretty much all I can think of as well.

Lesson of the day? Only watch 3D for blockbusters(budget-wise) movies full of special effects. And even then only if you are fine with 3D to begin with - many hate it even when well done.

On a related note my local theaters only have IW showings in 3D if I don't wanna watch it dubbed. A bit disgusting that they're forcing me to watch it in 3D, honestly. I mean, I'd have watched it in 3D anyway but it's annoying to have no option.
