Pika's opening weekend is gonna be at least 90M. More likely over 100M. So...you're ships gonna sink. ;)

I'm not saying it can't open to 100M+, I just don't think it's likely.. the hype kinda slowed down after that first trailer in November

when was the last time a live action non-franchise-non-remake movie opened to $100M+? I can only think of The Hunger Games and IT 2017 (and even that was a remake of a tv mini-series).

so

Not even worth continuing to track then. I’m off this sinking ship.

Gonna go prepare myself for SLOP 2

"Hype kinda slowed down"? Trailer trended at #1 for almost 2 days and was only shot down to #2 by reveal of Pokemon Sword and Shield.

This trailer that wasn't even released by the WB company but instead Ryan, is #3 on YT.

Literally BOP is long range tracking it for a 90M OW. So...that's likely gonna increase as we continue to get closer. Pika's LR tracking is at least $15M more then Aquaman, and we all know how that did on it's OW. By comparison at least.

And don't underestimate the marketing machine known as Ryan Reynolds. We all know what Deadpool 1 and 2 was estimated to make and what it ended up making in it's OW.

So I want to try to put some new context into these numbers.

Folks who have seen my tracking before know that on the very very final check, I manually adjust all showings that have six seats or less to a sellout (this is an artifact of when I was doing pure sellout counts [I also make a note for the historical record what the adjustment was]).

So even though there are "only" 12 sellouts for Endgame, right now there are another 27 showings with six seats or less left. That means the sellout count is already at a virtual 39 sellouts.

Another 11 showings beyond that are at 7 or 8 seats.  Combine all of those and you get 50 sellouts.

Infinity War finished with 59 sellouts (29 before the aforementioned adjustment).

There are still 15 days to go.

I don't have any good comps like Incredibles 2, so these will have to do.  Use with caution:

.2353x as many tickets sold as Fallen Kingdom after one day of pre-sales.

.2165x as many tickets sold as Crimes of Grindelwald after one day of pre-sales.

And finished editing in the numbers in the Pika Pika report.  Apologies for the premature posting. :)

I think I'll make it bi-weekly in this thread starting tomorrow (Thr/Sun).  Unless folks would like me to post it in here. I will be keeping track on my home spreadsheet for what it's worth.

To be fair, BOPs long range tracking doesn’t always correlate with actual tracking, Two good examples would be Poppins and Lego 2.

And we should also remember that barring Lego Movie 1, WB is notorious for mishandling family films (even Happy Feet, no memory of but I was 6 at the time, which some thought had $300M potential (looking at WOKJ)) limped to barely under $200M due to bad marketing) and it opens on the heels of Endgame despite being a well buzzed family film. I do think it can breakout but I can also see why others have a valid reason to underpredict.

I will not be as detailed and constant as @Porthos  but here goes

NYC (+ the usual few NJ Metro area) Fandango Ticket sales

As of now I am only listing fully shaded out Complete Sell Outs.

I don't have the time to check each reserved showing to see near sellouts but just clicking on haphazardly there are already  A LOT  (and some will never fully sell out b/c of wheel chair places)

Way back in 2016 for CW less than 20% of seats were Reserved (so much easier to check).

As of this morning after 2 full days of sales AEG is already in terms of theaters, showings and complete sellouts at AIW levels between April 22nd & 24th - the week of the premiere and after 5 weeks of sales

AEG: April 4 (8am)

Theaters: 58

Showings:  552

Reserved Seating: 437

Complete Sellouts: 52

AIW: April 8 (tickets had been on sale since March 17 - so 22 days)

Theaters: 50

Showings:  362

Reserved Seating:  217

Complete Sellouts:  25

Near Total Sellouts: 67 (complete + front row or less)

AIW: April 22 (Sunday)

Theaters: 58

Showings:  456

Reserved Seating:  259

Complete Sellouts:  47
Near Total Sellouts: 125 (complete + front row or less)

AIW: April 24 (Tuesday)

Theaters: 59

Showings:  581

Reserved Seating:  338
Complete Sellouts: 67

Near Total Sellouts: 132

AIW: April 26 (Thursday: 5pm)

Theaters: 59

Showings:  661

Reserved Seating:  380
Complete Sellouts: 115

Near Total Sellouts: 180

NYC (+ the usual few NJ Metro area) Fandango Ticket sales

I should have made it clear that Near Sellouts include Complete sellouts.  Should have just called them Sellouts :slaphead:

Complete SO (a canard since not all are complete some have a wheel chair space or three open and some that formerly shaded out had a returned/exchanged seat empty - but I kept it in the count)

Near Sellout is the old Tele method - front row or less though on small screens I usually only count it as near if it's half a row or less.

AEG:  APRIL 11 (Thur 5am)

Theaters: 59
Screens: 638
Reserved: 506
Complete Sellouts: 134
Total Sellouts: 268 (complete + near)

  • 1 theater and 86 more showings added since last week
  • AEG has 126 more Reserved showings than AIWs final day - so that's 126 more I can check for near sellouts that I couldn't for AIW
  • Still, AEG has 15 more Complete SOs and 88 more Overall Total Sellouts with 23 less showings than AIW on Preview night at 5pm
  • Even if all those uncountable non reserved 126 showings for AIW were  Near Sell Outs - SOs would total 10 less on April 24th than currently for AEG
