The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Recommended Posts

Pulse today 8:50-9:04 EST:

Dark Phoenix: 162/15 – yesterday it were 102/15, up 59%; CM had at that time 859/15 and Shazam 175/15.
Pets 2: 151/15 – yesterday 52/15, up 191%; The Lego Movie 2 had 110/15, Wonder Park 44/15, Dumbo 167/15, Aladdin 384/15, How to Train Your Dragon 3 227/15, all same day and time of the day.

Men in Black International: 4/15 – yesterday 7/15
Toy Story 4: 8/15 – yesterday 4/15

Child's Play: 1/15

And Pulse 10:50-11:04 EST:

Pets 2: 239/15 – yesterday 164/15, up 41%; The Lego Movie 2 had 160/15, Wonder Park 59/15, Dumbo 223/15, Aladdin 600/15, How to Train Your Dragon 3 325/15, all same day and time of the day. Not totally bad, but it did not have the jump I hoped for after yesterday. E.g. compared to Dumbo or The Lego Movie 2 it would reach 50M OW but OTOH it's behind HtTYD3 now and Idk if its walk ups can compensate that.
Dark Phoenix: 235/15 – yesterday 154/15, up 43%; CM had 1.500/15, Fantastic Beasts 2 593/15, Shazam 322/15, all same day and time of the day. So behind Shazam in the second counting, not good. And with these reviews, I also fear now an OW under 40M is coming.

At least MiBI and Toy Story 4 slowly increase.

MiBI: 11/15 – yesterday 6/15
Shaft: 1/15 – yesterday 1/15
Toy Story 4: 18/15 – yesterday 15/15

Edit: I just watched the trailer for Pets 2 (maybe I should have done this earlier ;)) and now I doubt that it will stay under 50M. It was a bit overexcited and episodic but several scenes were quite cute IMO.

Boxofficepro.com predicts 62M OW excluding the earnings from early screenings on May the 25th.

From both a tracking and fan perspective, Dark Phoenix should be used as training ground. Cannot for the life of me think of why they decided this was the direction to go and then to not put the decent marketing into it since selling was expected by that point.

Also, SLOP being so low reminds me of what we overall expected of the original before its shocking debut. 🤷‍♂️ perfect example of a film just hitting it right at the time and not being able to replicate it.

To me pets was a great one shot film that could have followed up with pixar-esque shorts before other main features. Would have worked well imo.

No doubt - there just wasnt a need for a sequel. If it wasnt for TS4, Id probably take my kiddos to see it but - budgets and all.

To be fair though, SLOP2 far exceeds #1 in every possible way and is much more justifiable for its existence.

If you did see it I don't think it would be wasted. Kids here in UK seem to really love it, and I personally enjoyed it a lot (and I slept part way through SLOP1... granted it was like 2 am but still)

Seriously over indexing Fandango sales.   Does anyone know what share of the ticketing market Atom has?

Scott Mendelson referenced a study of movie goers  that talked about the online/offline ticketing split as well as third party/company website online purchases.  But I couldn't tell offhand if they further split Atom and Fandago, and I didn't download the study/poll to find out.

Didn't find much else out when it came to Atom market share.

Maybe your slice of NYC just likes mutants. ;)

For $4 tickets NYers will like anything - that's more than 75% off my local's usual ticket price

Probably the only reason it's not sold out is b/c not enough people use T-Mobile.  ^_^

FWIW, when I last checked last night I didn't see much over-performance locally at the places that have Atom ticketing (Regal, SMG).  Nothing that leapt out at me at any rate.

I'll probably do a 5pm check for shits-and-giggles.  I'll keep an eye open to see if there is any marked jump at those locations.

I don’t. But I do use Atom for all of my tickets (lt links up to my theater loyalty points AND Disney Movie Rewards automatically!) and for my seat clients. I can write down all the theaters in NYC the app offers during tonight’s update if you want.

Someone said yesterday that Atom covers all of NYC.
