The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread: Electric Boogaloo

Detroit just missed the marketing mark I think...the trailers I've seen prior to movies seemed like you were gonna leave angry or icky after watching it, and it was gonna be an unpleasant, dark, depressing and even uncomfortable experience from start to finish...it doesn't help that the characters seemed to be mostly stereotypes in the trailers, with no one really being held up as someone for the audience to grasp onto, good or bad...

This was one I had initial interest, but when I found out more on the movie through follow-on trailers, I said pass for theatrical viewing (ala Rough Night)...I think I'll actually enjoy this more in a solo, home viewing environment, which is my current plan...and I suspect many folks may feel the same way...

I didn't feel this at all from any of the trailers. Nobody seems like a stereotype.

Why does Dark Tower have 7:19 show times? Is it some inside thing....

19 is an important number in the books, apparently.

Maybe it's the age difference we have:)...a lot of times I forget I've seen a lot (through both life experience and movie viewing experience) you all haven't:)...

Detroit is the type of film that would have done better during the awards season circuit. It's a film that already has awards season potential BUT I feel like folks are gonna skip out on it because it's such a heavy topic. It's definitely not a film that I'm gonna call all my friends or family up to go catch.

But i think if I was released later in the year, people may have gone to watch it because of its award season appeal.

Or maybe it would have flopped then too. Who knows

Kidnap is selling better than Detroit pretty much everywhere. Incredible. The only reason Detroit will be above it this weekend is because it has 800 more theaters. Kidnap is a smaller 47 Meters Down :ohmygod:

I think Kidnap might pull a Sleepless. Detroit is going under SMH on the weekend IMO.

It is and hard choice imo, Detroit did feel like he could have work in August and if you go all-in award season (late platform, wide release once the award talk hopefully caught on) you will be hurt if your movie get no award traction and will be lost in the mass of award season movie competing around the same time for the same award audience. It is a big bet that is better to use on movie that either: really need award attention to have any chance, have really high chance to get award attention, have above the line talent/producer that ask for it.

War dogs/WarRoom/The gift/Straight Outta Compton did well enough in the last few year's in August, with less competition in that adult drama genre usually it can be easier to get some attention.

The Gift and War Dogs are 2 example of movie that probably did more in august that they would have trying to compete in the award season.

Annabelle Creation set for 3,400+ theaters next weekend and The Glass Castle estimated for 1,400. Nothing for Nut Job 2. Seems obvious that The Glass Castle is being dumped at this point.

lmao wow that's a shitty TC for The Glass Castle.

Agreed on both. I have Atomic Blonde under SMH too.

Detroit def gonna do not too good but it doing bad in Han's area is the least surprising thing ever.

This is also true, but it's selling the weakest of all 3 openers everywhere around Orlando.

As someone who has seen all those films mentioned AND watched Detroit at a special screening, I can tell you that Detroit is a much heavier film and it's not one I'd recommend to see in theaters....in the middle of summer.

But its definitely one that stays for you and for that, I could have seen it working during awards season. Especially I do think it could have gotten traction then given the types of reviews it's getting.

I think @CJohn's Sleepless comparision is probably more accurate, but this would be hilarious (and sad, for Detroit's sake) if true. If Kidnap made half as much money as 47MD, it would truly bring Relativity back from bankruptcy

Kidnap is being released by another studio after Relativity sold it off.

Amazing that with 3 new movies and in its 5th weekend, Spidey is still on here, ala WW:)...I think he's gotta drop sometime today or Detroit and Kidnap are going sub-$7M...

Good that JLaw passed on The Glass Castle. Mother! is going to be a big hit, I hope.
