That means Coco is now the only wide release for Thanksgiving Weekend. Probably for the best. Thanksgiving is usually unkind to non-Disney openers, the outlier (Creed) aside.

Maybe they think it's better for the movie's awards chances. Not that I think it's gonna compete seriously for anything beyond Chastain and Adapted Screenplay.

I'm not going to say this is a good or bad move quite yet. This could've been the adult film over Thanksgiving, which Orient Express will now have all to itself. If STX is moving it here to keep it fresher in the Academy's minds, it might work in their favor. The only other release on this date is Insidious, though I'm expecting Shape of Water to go wide too. This and Death Wish moving means good news for Lady Bird's wide expansion (and potentially Three Billboards?).

Some of the indie theaters around me are showing The Shape of Water as opening in late December, so it'll probably go wide on Christmas Day.

I think it'll be in 500-700 theaters on Christmas; I can't see Fox giving theaters three wide releases over that frame.

I haven't seen this yet (looking forward to it though) but the Best Picture field is already crowded as is. This is probably going to register as 15th place at best.

Probably the movie isn't tracking very well and they wanted to help it get as much oscar buzz/awareness as it can before going wide. At least according to early reactions this seems to be a crowdpleaser, but that won't help if not enough people show up when it first goes to 1000+ theatres. Look at Battle of the Sexes who had many signs of a movie that could be a medium-size WOM hit, but not enough people knew or cared about it when it went wide.

Someone said this was the first Good Poker Movie ever. They never saw "The Cincanatti Kid" made in 1965 with Steve McQueen at the height of his career;it's a fun film that holds up well today.

FUn thing is that Poker is still very much the game of choice with Film Crews in Hollywood.

That's not a poker movie. That's a Bond movie where the second act is focused on a poker tournament. The actual game of Poker is not the focus of it.
