THR updated to $40m or more.  I imagine it's difficult to extrapolate from early shows only since horror plays significantly stronger at night and this one is significantly above any other horror movie.

Definetely not what you would call an "event movie". On the contrary...

This is a special occasion so the norm does not apply.

Agree. This is a much younger crowd too and I don't think they are as interested in football.  Yesterday's opener was also the lowest ratings since 2009.

I see much more crossover with Sully and football also but key is what you said about making time to watch an event movie.

Re: hurricane box office impact

-Florida reportedly 5-6% of box office sales but this movie will be halfway to 100M by tonight before hurricane impact...so 2.5-3% impact? Maybe less as prospective Sat/ Sun watchers pack in Friday

-For the NFL+hurricane argument remember not to double count.  People who won't watch due to NFL and are also hurricane impacted only impact the weekend box office once.

Yeah, I'm only expecting a drop around 55% next weekend. The following week will probably be over 60% with the loss of large formats and no cushion.

I'll bet casino points that doesn't happen. With great wom and no competition? No amounts of IMAX loss will cause It to drop more than 55% on the 3rd weekend at worst. I see where you're coming from, but this is really not the average horror movie, with or without special formats. Albeit Kingsman and Ninjago should take business from it, but over 60%? Too harsh imo. Gotta be a little more reasonable there, mate.

Give me another week and I'll consider the bet

Yeah, this is gonna be a much more popular movie at night than it will be in the afternoon. Makes it hard to predict how it'll hold over the weekend since the typical matinee crowds (families and seniors) won't be here for this. Could see it doing $40M for today and $85M for the weekend (which would still be an otherworldly opening).

Warner Bros' marketing team really deserve a raise or a bonus. They've consistently delivered on the last few films and they've again with IT.

Poor WeneedtotalkaboutKevin's prediction that IT would do $40m OW has been smashed in one day and the domestic total of $100m will possible be matched by Sunday or Monday! WB doing well must be driving him mad!

At least he has the bombing of Geostorm to look forward to, even if he'll have to weather Lego Ninjago and Blade Runner first.

The bombing of Geostorm that nobody will be surprised about much like King Arthur. WB are only distributing it and likely wrote it off ages ago
