the crazy thing about lolita is that kubrick is seen as some master of control but he lets Sellers get away with some unbearably long improv shtick in that movie. more like stanley apatow. he found the right balance with strangelove but sheesh.

After STRANGELOVE there’s a slow decline. Okay, okay, after 2001.

I’ve never seen the Killing, Lolita or Barry Lyndon.  Spartacus once years ago.  Eyes Wide Shut isn’t very good.  Full Metal Jacket is one half a great movie.  Once the boot camp scenes end it feels like it could have been made by anyone.  2001 I try to get into and usually 20 minutes in my mind wanders.

That leaves Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove, A Clockwork Orange and the Shining.  I saw Paths a few years back thought it was incredible.  Strangelove is brilliant.  Clockwork has grow on me.  And the Shining is my favorite horror movie

Can someone give me an explanation for the ABC grades as used here at BOT?

I've seen different ones in the net

Like

A = ?/10 - 10/10

B =

C =

D =

F =

Means a + or a - something like 0.5 or 0.25 or ?

For me...

A/A+ (I don't give these out much - MAYBE 1-2 a year, and sometimes none) - 10

A- - 9

B+ - 8

B - 7

B- - 6 (last grade I usually recommend a movie at)

C+ - 5

C - 4

C- - 3

D+ - 2

D - 1

F - 0

Yes, there's no D-, but really is there even from a teacher?:)...Few movies for me fall below C- (although I've had a few big blockbusters down there recently), and very few get an A or an A+:)...

So, anytime my family grades a movie (b/c they understand letters), that's where they are coming from...
