(but then how do you decide if Galaxy Quest or Scream or The Lion King are actually "better" when they are totally different movies...)

You just go with your gut and make a choice.

Then when the next ranking comes around, you can change your mind. :)

I could understand you saying Tarkovsky wasn't the best director if he only did it once, but making the best film of all time... not once, but twice though? Solaris and Stalker are simply two a greatest films ever made, what other director (except Jim of course) could pull something like that off. I mean nothing against you if you prefer Nolan or some television gone comic book movie director but I'll stick to directors with vision who progress cinema as an art-form rather than digress it.

SOLARIS and STALKER are great (I'm a bigger stan for the latter). Also very partial to ANDREI RUBLYEV and IVAN'S CHILDHOOD (admittedly that's a very straightforward movie). I also like MIRROR, but admittedly I should see it again -- I find it amusing that he thought that was his most obvious work. SACRIFICE and NOSTAGLIA are a notch below -- they have some of his greatest sequences but I think they're a little looser than his others. Man, though, the ending of NOSTALGIA is insanely good.

Now think about it I've never seen Nostalgia, it was The Mirror that I had watched and didn't realise until too late that there wasn't a plot.

How serious would people take my list if I put The Room in my Top 50?

Well, The Room is great for a different reason than being great.

But I'll be voting for a different 'Room' instead:

I will say all of you are so good - I have a hard time ranking more than a few in a "real" order...I'm considering actually doing this ranking, but man, it's hard...it's almost easier for me to make separate categories of films 1st and then intersperse them (but then how do you decide if Galaxy Quest or Scream or The Lion King are actually "better" when they are totally different movies - although on Galaxy Quest - that's another amazing comedy that holds up and might be better than all the source material it's based on:)...

I'd probably change my mind seconds after posting, when I see 10 movies I'd forgotten posted on someone else's list:)...
