How is it a PC phrase? Saying "significant other" for polling purposes is much better and easier than "boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife"

Its PC because it only started being used some 20-25+ years ago when groups cited the use of "spouse". In context spouse had always been associated as a heterosexual opposite so "significant other" came into being. Allegedly spouse was somehow exclusive to the heterosexuals.

spouse is just for married couples though. SO covers that plus boyfriends/girlfriends so it's a more catch-all term.

Not alleged since legally only heterosexual could marry then.

But as said the term was meant as a catchall to include all romantic unmarried pairs.

this is so dumb. The term has been used for a long time. Significant Other is a gender neutral term that can encompass someone intimate relationship partner regardless of marital or relationship status. It had nothing to do with same sex couples initially.

Allegedly? It's not like the first gay marriage to ever happen in the world was in 2001 in the Netherlands.... Or the first state to legalize gay marriage  in the US was in 2004.

Dumbasses are just saying shit just to say shit lmao

You people are upset about the term “significant other”?

Like... who cares?

The conservative persecution complex is real. It's a syndrome where people that don't have to face systemic problems invent them because they are incapable of the conversation not being about them.
