The Dark Tower | August 4, 2017 | McConaughey, Elba | Reviews coming in, it's a bomb etc. etc. - we know this drill by now

I've read only the first book. Does the movie combine multiple entries in the Dark Tower series?

First book felt like a set-up for later books rather than independent storyline. But I enjoyed the hell out of it. "Blade of grass" monologue at the end was incredible.

I'm not sure anyone knows exactly how they're approaching this n

^^ Well, color me intrigued. It certainly renders any angst about changes moot (though I hope we still see the main primary characters that drove the story in the novel.)

Spoiler

I haven't read the books (I want to but who the hell has the time), but I've read about the ending. It sounds like a really cool and bold way to go, but I can imagine a lot of King fans being pissed about it.

I thought the ending was absolutely perfect. In fact, I can't think of a better choice in terms of how King did it. The people who flipped out -- IMO -- are the same sort of people who demand answers to every single thing in a story and expect it to be this hermetically-sealed object. The same sorts who critique a story or character because they didn't act in an exactly logical manner, the same sorts who want explanations for the un-explainable.

(Not really sure why I spoiler-tagged that, lol.)

Anthony Breznican (writing for EW) has a whole series of articles diving into this. Fair amount of book spoilers, so be wary.

Two major characters you WON'T see in #TheDarkTower - and why. (Also - confirmation of that "secret sequel" theory.)?https://t.co/KfPDZFlCAV

The big news (to me) is

the absence of Eddie Dean and Susannah. However, the good news is if this gets a sequel, both those characters will be in it. This makes sense -- they're stripping the story down to the basics for the first movie (much like the first book, actually), and with luck and good box-office, they can expand and continue telling the bigger story. And, of course, Eddie and Susannah don't show up until the second book anyway.

Thanks for those links Tele. I'm really hyped for this adaptation/sequel. Real shame about the ka-tet not being fully formed yet but it's understandable. I wonder how much this movie needs to make to guarantee a sequel though. Would 300m WW do for a sequel considering its budget, I wonder?

The article mentions the budget as 60m. If that stays true, I think anything over a couple hundred million is a big win.

I take it this is one of your most anticipated movies, Tele. I'm looking forward to it too. I'm worried about the director though, who is a complete unknown to me.

Btw, does the material require an R rating or could they get away with a PG-13?

Require? Probably not "require", but there are areas in the overall story where an R rating would serve it well. You could probably do the first book as an PG-13 without sacrificing much, but then again since they're taking such an unusual approach to the material it's hard to say what will appear or not.
