Nothing has been released that people have wanted to see, that's a large part of why the numbers are so low. I'm sure there are other factors but that's the biggest one. The constant doom and gloom is obnoxious.

People tend to forget that a box office drought that goes on for weeks or months is nothing new. Like you said, the lack of appealing and diverse options for people is the biggest factor. Glass was the "biggest" movie in Januara, come on. And you can definetly argue that films like Lego 2, Alita, Happy Death Day 2 or Cold Pursuit aim for a niche audience among the GA.

People generally come for movies they want to see. If theres nothing out there that interests them, they stay at home.

A too late sequel and a disappointing sequel were the biggest releases. People are acting like two super highly anticipated comic book movies flopped or something.

66% from 3D showings? :jeb!: a little reminder for A2 how 3D ain't dead, just 3D films have sucked

Yeh opening day though, so they didn’t know if the film sucked or not yet lol.

What would actually be classed as “good” for Alita? Considering how much money it needs to break even?

Is this another Tarzan? The numbers look ok but it probably never actually makes any profit?

Realistically, without knowing how much it makes in China and Japan, Alita should definetly aim for Mad Max: Fury Road numbers (150Mish) domestically to have a chance of dreaming of beeing profitable.

Is $35m 5 day opening weekend for a $170-237m budgeted movie (before P&A) ever cosidered as being “good”?

deadline removed that 237m number from their article and replaced it by 160m-170m.... still a lot, but not outrageously so :)

That article was false and was removed from Deadline. $160-$170m seems to be the real value.

Alita is an original film (all but technically), first week always going to deceive the eye.

According to Mojo RPO breakdown is

138 Dom + 226 OS-China + 219 China = 583

Both Alita and RPO have a similar prod budget. Alita could match OS-China but will fall short Dom and well short China imo.
