The Marvels? Iron Man 2? Avengers: Age of Ultron?

i don't think MCU made sequels look easy..

They all got better reviews than Aquabro 2 and WW84. Iron Man 2 still made $623M way back in 2010, which is dream for DCEU movies even now. Age of Ultron would've been the highest grossing DCEU movie too with its $1.4B gross.

Hem; not the Marvel vs DC thread - but Wonder Woman 1984 was a day and date release, so not apples-to-apples. Plus MCU films are known to have higher RT scores even if the film quality is actually not great - like the Marvels, Thor 4 or Dr Strange 2.

Superhero movie landscape is very different then compared to now; superhero fatigue is real and can be seen in 2023. Aquaman is the last film of a dead universe; no1 should care for it while The Marvels is one of the key connecting films to an existing universe; with "Marvel"(s) literally in the title. I think both did badly so why piss on one?

Both sides have made bad sequels.. Dr Strange MoM is good? lol.

MCU made sequels look easy, but the drop from WW to WW84 in quality was huge. The case is same or even worse with Aquabro 2.

The Suicide Squad is better than all these movies from both sides... and Marvels did not have better reviews than WW84.

SS somehow...OK, I'll give you that...I still can't explain the success of that one!

I can explain that one, at least the initial success.

Suicide Squad had some killer marketing in its lead-up.  The toxic/extremely messed-up version of the Joker was attracting a lot of attention and buzz pre-release. I would even go as far as to say it struck a chord with a part of the DC base (more on this below).

Plus there was a real genuine interest in seeing Harley Quinn on screen and while probably verging on wish-casting, seeing a Harlequin/Joker "romance" story unfold.  Or at least folks looking forward to Harlequin and the Joker interacting on the silver screen.

Add in edge lords really going to bat for this take on the Joker as well as a great song for much of the TV marketing and "live vicariously through Bad Boys Doing Bad Things" and we get the OW we got.

As for its actual run?  Well, 2.4x domestically isn't really saying much one way or the other.  Wasn't violently rejected like BvS or JL.  But wasn't taken to like other CBM films, either.  But I do think it partially tapped into a mood of the GA/struck a cultural chord that Joker would fully tap into three years later. "Partially" because the take on the Joker was a little (okay, a lot) too edgy and anarchist that bordered too closely to a horror villain than a CBM one.   Joker would thread that needle to a much better degree and reap the success.

(that the Joker was only in Suicide Squad for all of what... ten minutes?... might also explain how it was viewed in its immediate aftermath)

((not that screen time is everything — FUN FACT: Darth Vader is only in the OG SW for nine minutes or so! — but given how prevalent the Joker was in the marketing, not being in the film as much as people thought probably mattered more than a little))

$120M DOM (assuming $30M 3-day holds)

$180M OS

$50M China

$350M WW total

Very optimistic prediction, I know. Probably won't turn out this way, but what's the harm in dreaming a bit?

You always sound like you want to be optimistic but doubt yourself… don’t.

And I’m gonna say higher. $35M OW (3 day) + 5x multiplier. Now that’s optimistic. Overseas number? Idk but this thing is crossing $400M WW. Call me crazy.

It physically can't really have a 35M OW.

Yeah, well that's what you get by being a DC fan lol. You try to have hope, but more times than not you're let down. It sucks, but I've come to terms with it.

As for your prediction, I would say there is a non-zero chance of that happening. It'd be poetic for the highest grossing DCEU movie since Aquaman to be its sequel. And if it does do $175M domestic as you say, the 40/60 split w/o China the first had would put the OS number at $262.5M. Add China's $50M and you get a total of $487.5M. Not likely, but it's a fun guess.
