You're just being absurd now, Variety also say it need something in the 400's to break even.

OUATIH needs $ 400M to break even because of the deals with the cast and the director himself, not because of the budget, it's a completely different situation.

It's not a flop, far from it, and you don't need to like the movie to admit that. From your POV even the first Maleficent barely break even, it doesn't make sense.

I would guess Sony sees OUATIH as a prestige piece where they got Tarantino, they'll make the money back and then some once other revenue streams are included.

It's a similar situation to Bond, Sony made very little profit from it because most of the money went to EON and MGM but it's more a status thing.

And Jolie is not getting a gigantic paycheck for MAL2, after the success of the first one - a sequel that needs her?

It was part of the 185 reported budget?? Quit being thick headed as if some are ignoring things to make one seem better. Disney is a rare player in backend deals such as the type that skews the profit line. If Jolie is pulling a bunch of money post her paycheck its been completely left out of reporting / discussion behind the scenes. ALL of which is again showing your willingness to extend a bias instead of dealing with factual data and information.

Doesnt change the film from being an under performer but again, its not a flop.

I could see both Mal 2 and Joker finish ahead of estimates. Evening will slow down quiet a bit but even with that Sunday looks good for increase with actuals.

Thanks for sharing. The new ability you have brought to the discussion table is great!

Where did I say it was a flop? Talk about "factual data and information", can't even follow the argument.

It’s not, 1/3 Of Genysis OS come from China.

I don’t know why you keep ignoring this but anyway.

It would be a significant difference if MAL2 was strong domestically. But it's not: the money is coming from countries like Italy instead of China - the rate of return isn't all that different; it would be if it was from North America. $110M DOM on a $185M budget isn't good at all and it would need a lot more overseas to be considered a success.

China's rate of return is 23% and it has no ancillary market to speak of when it comes to TV and Home Media.

Not sure if Italian DVD sales will convince Disney to fund a MAL3...

Also, it isn't like MAL2 didn't get released in China, ~60M of that OS will indeed come from China compared to $110M for Genysis.

What a solid argument .... if all of Mal2's OS grosses are Italy and China.

I doubt Disney will green-light Mal3 b/c it's a diminishing  franchise.  That doesn't mean this installment won't be profitable.

Overseas pays 40%. China pays like 21% net. Horrible rate of return.
