From what I'm hearing they may have downplayed just how much of a musical it is. Two of the original numbers appear to be, and I quote, "absolute bangers".

They also may have overplayed Gaga's screentime. And yeah it's definitely a critique of the worst fans of the first film. "It’s not gonna do numbers like the first but it’s much more interesting".

All of this really reminds me of Gremlins 2 which was also very different from its original film and kinda meta critique as well, and it wasn't appreciated until decades later.

okay there's no way Lady Fucking Gaga doesn't know this is the exact description of what a musical is. They're just trying to avoid that label like the plague as a press point then

It's a sequel to a billion dollar film. It's the highest profile movie at the festival by a mile.

Yep watch this be loved by us people who thought the first was decent/okay/eh and hated by the people who planned to name their first born Arthur Fleck assuming they were ever lucky enough to conceive a child.

I don’t think the first one’s a good film by any stretch, but this is probably the only blockbuster this year whose critical reception I’m genuinely interested in. Deadpool 3’s reviews initially teased some mayhem but were boring in the end.

just a warning, two local critics gave 2/5 to it on local film site after press screening in Venice. The reactions are mainly saying Todd have no idea what he can talk more about the characters.
