Pretty wild how everyone seems eager to throw Phillips under the bus for this, at the very least his relationship with WB has to be over now (since every movie he's made since 2009 has been at the studio). I doubt this will entirely destroy his career but I get the sense the future for him is the same as Peter Farrelly: another filmmaker who struck awards gold whose pre-Oscar vehicle filmography could also be nicely described as "uneven" overall at best and without much auteur cred, whose follow-up to his Best Picture winner flopped into oblivion, and now appears to have been quickly relegated back to making the kind of disposable movies that were his bread and butter before the attempted change of career pace, but designed to watched only as background noise on streamers as those types of projects are circa 2024.

Tom Hooper. Big success for awhile. The mega flop Cats put him into director jail and he’s still there.

I still don't understand who in their right mind green lit that cats movie and thought this might be next big thing or what not.

Let's be honest here: most big names directors are gone now or past their peak. WB were desperate, made some stupid decisions and lost a lot of money. Since 2020s it's like 1 in 3 is a bomb for them. Like epic bomb. But Phillips clearly has some ego problems and this become the perfect storm. We'll see if WB can recover but that won't happen with their current leadership.

Everything with this project screams ego and pretentiousness from the director & lead actor. A Joker musical? Stupid, pretentious idea. The title is pretentious! No test screenings? Arrogant. Even James Cameron & Chris Nolan use the test screening process to help improve their films. Hard to believe WB gave this level of budget & authority to Phillips.

And the reason for not allowing test screening was supposedly "leaks" about the ending lol

Can we all agree that the biggest loser in all of this has to be the first one? The industry must be going "uh we made a mistake" over all those nominations/awards that year when it was assumed that movie was a one-off that wouldn't spawn a sequel at all, let alone one so radioactive it would torpedo that flick's legacy and diminish its achievements in retrospect. A debacle that will be the subject of a tell-all book one day.

No, If you allowed the quality of the subsequent filmography  to affect your assessment of the earlier one , that is something wrong with your professionalism. Each auteur project supposed to be ring-fencing from each other, if view change with time , then that could only mean people don’t even know what they want, and they are just trying to fit in whenever the trend go.

Here’s a conspiracy angle. Phillips & Phoenix secretly hated the success of the first movie. They decided to completely tank the second movie and burn down the whole thing, guaranteeing they won’t be dragged back for a 3rd movie. If that was their goal, they succeeded big time. And they made a bunch of money in the process. Lol

The first has been re-evaluated by everyone since especially the audience.  People mostly remember it for Phoenix's performance.

No it isn’t and no the industry isn’t saying that

I believe no one ever sets out to actually make a bad movie, but this is one of those times where I can't help but wonder if everyone involved actually did lol.

Phoenix will come out of this easier than Phillips but between his recent professional controversy (and the fact it's come out it isn't the first time he pulled a stunt like that on a movie right before filming started) and this being a massive bomb for the ages beyond even the most pessimistic expectations, he'll probably opt to keep a really low profile for a while. Wouldn't be surprised if the Ari Aster ensemble flick that's in the can is his last acting gig for a couple of years.
