Kingdom of the Planet Of The Apes | May 10, 2024 | Wes Ball to develop and direct

Recommended Posts

Saw an early access screening this evening. Movie is good overall, but you definitely feel the runtime for what is on the surface a pretty simple/straightforward story. Problems crop up in the second half as the film starts putting one eye on what the writers want to explore next instead of focusing just on the film at hand.

It was good, not great. Bit too bloated and I would have liked to get a bit more into the state of the world, but the character dynamics work for me. I liked how they did the ape/human dynamic differently than previous films, particularly at the end. 7/10, interested to see what comes next.

Judging by the responses, it's a very well made film with a solid emotional core and an intriguing story that's sometimes bogged down by the bloated length. Solid either way. I'm curious to see it.

Is it just me, or is the box office tracking for this movie setting up to be a disappointment financially? Godzilla kotm had a 170M budget and was considered a disappointment with a 48M domestic opening. With Kingdom looking to open to something similar with a 160-165M budget, I'm surprised more aren't worried about it making a return on investment.

This is looking at a 100M+ opening worldwide. Nothing to suggest it won’t make it’s money back with solid reviews and wom

So this movie proved what some of us have been arguing that really late embargo isn´t always because of shityy ass reviews. This is like Disney´s best reviewed blockbuster in a looong time. No 2% here

Fox in particular has dropping embargos really late these days

Apes the day before previews with 83%

The First Omen on day of previews with 81%

No One Will Save You in the day of release with 81%

In other studios there’s also examples like Barbie and Oppenheimer. It really isn’t a rule anymore that late = bad.

Really hoping the walkups come through for this but just like the Fall Guy the reviews in the end are good but not best movie ever great so just like if you did not have a massive desire to see a Gosling-Blunt action comedy you were not jumping off the fence if you do not have a massive desire to see a Planet of the Ape movie you may not come off the fence. The presales seem to be suggesting 45-50. Hope it can surprise.

In an ideal world, Rotten Tomatoes wouldn’t have the kind of pull it’s had for the past decade or so, but it’s still nice to see this movie not get eviscerated by critics like Sneider tried to suggest. We need to stop giving that guy so much attention.

I think we're only going to see more of this after last summer. No one wants to be Indy 5 sitting there for weeks with middling/bad reviews dragging down the marketing campaign. Studios increasingly don't have a grasp on whether their movies will review well and the risks of an early embargo killing momentum outweigh the potential benefits of glowing reviews bumping up interest a week or two in advance. Plus culture moves on so quickly now. You could argue it's better for a movie to have positive reviews hit when someone can buy a ticket for the next day than have them come out a month in advance and then have all that buzz dissipate long before the release date hits like Fall Guy.

Looks like the actual review score will hover somewhere in the low 80s, which is solid overall.

That’s one of the bad things about RT. If a movie is not in the 90s, then it isn’t “good enough” to go see. People see a score in the 70s and 80s and assume the movie is mediocre.
