Best Picture Predictions - 2020

Recommended Posts

Quote

“Until further notice, and for the 93rd Awards year only, films that had a previously planned theatrical release but are initially made available on a commercial streaming or VOD service may qualify in the Best Picture, general entry and specialty categories for the 93rd Academy Awards under these provisions:

  1. The film must be made available on the secure Academy Screening Room member-only streaming site within 60 days of the film’s streaming or VOD release;
  2. The film must meet all other eligibility requirements

We may not have a theatrical release, but by god, Artemis Fowl WILL have an Oscar run! :sparta:

I wonder if A24 is hastily making deals to put Green Knight onto someone's service...

This announcement is not really that big. Combining sound isn't really much of a deal and saying only films that had planned a theatrical release can be eligible really isn't changing much. It's actually pretty snobbish of them when you get down to it.

How can they prove that it was a planned theatrical release?

Trank and his producing team delivered more cuts, and waited for answers. Unlike on Fantastic Four, patience paid off. Vertical Entertainment eventually picked up Capone, promising the director to release his original version in a theatrical run. When the coronavirus hit, plans changed and concessions were made.

Doesn't matter. The screening that took place was a disaster. Hence, this article was released. If it had gone well, the article would have released after Capone's VOD/theatrical release.

Bohemian Rhapsody sucked but Malek still won the Oscar. I was talking about Hardy, not the film.

if tenet being the first movie back actually pays off for them and it's a big success off the back of that then it'll win best picture. if not, if it fails and a bunch of people get COVID and die from tenet screenings then it'll win all the Razzies. my official prediction.

Apparently the latest bullshit D'Souza "documentary" is set to come out in August in time for all the election stuff so Nolan would have tough competition to beat there. Think the only other alternative for them is Dolittle probably sweeping just for being the other easiest target of this diminished movie year.

D'Souza has a good grift going. Release a "documentary" every 2 years and make money from the investors. It feels like a producers like scam.

It's like when they kept making the rest of the Atlas Shrugged trilogy even though they kept flopping harder with each movie. The people funding these clearly don't care about making money as much as believing that their (false) message is getting out there, even if it falls completely on deaf ears every single time.

My favorite thing to come from those movies

“With Tom Hardy giving the worst performance of his career”
“But sadly, this just runs out of ideas quicker than the final skit of SNL to the point director Josh Trank literally decides to have Hardy shit his pants to end a scene.”
“Very grotesque and dumb”

Game over for Trank.

As for Hardy, he needs to do more British set movies. Though Venom was fun.

Oscar calibre actor he ain't.

He's one of the best actors working right now. He's fantastic and Locke and already got an Oscar nomination for The Revenant.

one could argue he was even better than Leo in The Revenant. but Leo's win was just an overdue thing so it's w/e tbh

Spike Lee's Da 5 BLOODS will be out on Netflix on June 12. Thought they have saved it for later in the year but they were likely planning to take it to Cannes like BlacKkKlansman did.

that's really early, I thought they'd keep it until TIFF/Venice.

but seems like after the new Oscar rules, Netflix might skip the fall festivals and not wait around anymore.

would we get Mank or Blonde before the fall?

Yeah, for sure. In fact Netflix is gonna have a busy fall. They have:

Blonde

The Boys in the Band (adaptation of the Tony-winning revival from the same creative team)

Hillbilly Elegy

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (August Wilson adaptation with Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis)

Mank

The Midnight Sky (George Clooney directed sci-fi movie starring him and Felicity Jones)

The Prom

Makes sense why they would put Lee's out in the summer.
