Roth has got to have blackmail evidence on Hollywood execs. No other explanation for how he keeps getting projects greenlit.
The Wild Eric
https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2023/1/55ep04tr99ey02vqlxjprd0tpw4ltq Quote Back in September, I was wondering what was going on with Eli Roth’s “Borderlands,” a video game adaptation from a screenplay he co-wrote with Craig Mazin. I had suspected during the fall, after a release date delay, that the film was in trouble, but nowhere near the drama that we learned today. The fairly reliable Daniel Richtman is reporting on Patreon that Eli Roth was fired from “Borderlands” and that Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) was hired for reshoots after bad test screening reactions. Reshoots for “Borderlands” happened in early Summer 2022 with Gary Ross hired as a new writer. The movie was test-screened again in November and it looks like Lionsgate just didn’t feel like Roth could save the film and pulled the plug on him.
filmlover
I'm guessing this will eventually surface as an abandoned curiosity dumped unceremoniously on streaming someday.
BadOlCatSylvester
This movie was already the perfect toxic cocktail. A washed up has-been torture porn director paired up with the equally ancient Borderlands IP. Now we get to add the Josstice League special onto it! Seriously, the parallels with Josstice are eerie. They first bring in a new writer for an initial round of reshoots, then when they still don't like it they decide to bring in a completely new director to reshoot it all over again. I'm guessing Tim Miller couldn't find much feature film work after Dark Fate flopped, so I do get why he'd want to be involved. He also has his prolific VFX studio to fall back on in case this gig also fails. If I were Lionsgate I'd just sell it to Netflix or something and move on. I'm sure they'd be happy to do business with you after Glass Onion's success. Certainly a far less costly move than these desperate reshoots which will likely make the film even worse and even more expensive. I hope Jablinki got paid nicely at least. Video Games age so quickly and so poorly that someone can call Borderlands "ancient" and I can't come up with anyway to pushback against it. The fact they shat out a Halo TV show that went nowhere in the year 2022 is still funny to me. God help whoever's trying to put together a Gears Of War Movie. AJG
The studios PR team saying there was a scheduling conflict and Roth wasn't available to direct. A whole lie. Deadline are floating it like they have an EXCLUSIVE, similar to what happened with Black Adam. Its sad to see what that site has become.

Lucas
I hadn't paid any attention to this production until the recent news and it's been very entertaining. Why in the absolute hell anyone would think Eli Roth should be directing this (or anything) is beyond me and it's even funnier to hear the script apparently being really good. Great actors and a great script and Eli Roth still can't do it.

I , too am puzzled at how Eli Roth keeps getting work on some pretty large projects. It is not so much because he makes crappy films, it's that he makes crappy films that don't make money and still gets good gigs. SpiderByte
Always a good sign when a writer disowns his own script

dudalb
This was already looking like a real stinker, but the writer having his name taken off it sort of seals the deal that this is a bad movie. Particuraly given the quality of some of the movies that the writer kept his name on. Too bad, 'Borderlands" is a favorite game of mine.
