The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Numbers for Smile in SW/Toronto Ontario havent budged appreciably. Thurs and Fri both have haven't even made it to 1 percent sales yet. Pretty much the numbers stayed static so no real point posting what is almost identical to yesterdays. People just aren't buying seats. That may change comes the Wednesday madness when more theatres and seats start dropping. Im still keeping track for comp purposes for future movies, but today just no change really. Hopefully I have some numbers that might reach 1 percent sales? Maybe?

I'm ready to stop seeing that trailer and all those online ads. Like we get it, she smiles creepily, ok.

Anyone know what's the Monday Mystery Movie? Regal has tickets for a movie for 5$ saying "watch a new movie before it's official release date. Which movie it is will be a mystery".

I'm guessing either Bros or Smile since they come out next weekend

Actually it might be Smile after all. Never mind

I wish Smile would breakout a bit. This September needs it.

Smile had a weird marketing stunt last week where they paid a guy to sit at a baseball game right behind the catcher and just smile and stare into the camera the entire time. Felt sorry for that guy. It didn't even catch on in the media as a big stunt.

Smile looks too derivative of other horror movies (in particular, The Ring) for it to have ever had a chance at breaking out big IMO. The horror breakouts we've seen recently had little extra something special to them that hasn't been there for this.

Down to the whole "7 days" thing.

The Regal mystery movie tomorrow is The Greatest Beer Run Ever. Was informed of this by a Regal manager over on a Discord server I'm on.

That’s alright with me. I’m sure Beer Run is at least fine. I liked Green Book enough, and critics are just punishing Farrelly for winning Picture.

The concept of this movie (and the book) is absolutely absurd and anything less than spectacular on execution would make it ridiculous and insensitive, and since Farrelly isn't exactly a great director i can see why critics maybe dislike it no matter what they think about Green Book (which was well reviewed)

That would make sense if the initial reactions were overwhelmingly negative, but a lot of them were “this is fine.” Even a lot of the people who watched it where shocked by the incredibly negative meta score. The score being that low straight out of the gate means that critics went in with their minds already made up.

Green Book was well reviewed at the time. But there’s a lot of new critics since then, and attitudes have changed since the pandemic. And even at the time, most critics hated that it won over Roma.
