BO Germany/Austria: Dune first 2024 blockbuster (3mil admissions)

Recommended Posts

legs in germany does not seem to be that great any more. Previously 5x legs was common. I guess SH and action movies are frontloaded anyway.

Edit: Insidekino is saying 525K tickets. That is amazing hold for sure. Should make 3.5m admissions at this rate?

The first trend (insidekino.de):

#1 GotG2: 525k and already 1.6M admissions after Sunday, very good, 89% of the total of GotG
#2 Get Out: 220k – a nice start
#3 Fast 8 150k
#4 The Boss Baby: 60k
#5 The Smurfs: 50k

....

A Monster Calls: 35k

And some Thursday actuals (source Blickpunkt:Film):

GotG2: 55k – so again underestimated yesterday
Get Out: 21k
Fast 8: 15k
BatB: 5k
A Monster Calls: 2k
Einsamkeit und Sex und Mitleid: 1.5k
Victoria – Männer & andere Missgeschicke: 1.2k
Shin Godzilla: 600 in only 24 theaters, today and at the weekend it will get a bit more

Overall, a nice weekend with excellent drops for family releases in the 0-10% range. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is already near to the first one's total (will beat it next weekend) and had a decent drop, and Get Out opened in the expected range (even if some were hoping for 200k+). The surprise was Expedition Happiness which did exceptionally well for a docu. The weekend's loser was A Monster Calls which got released with very little noise anyway.

Next weekend: Virtually the only noteworthy release is Guy Ritchie's King Arthur - I doubt that Ritchie is the right guy for this but medievally themed movies tend to do fairly well in Germany, so #2 should be the goal (I'm sure GotG2 will not crumble). Weather conditions for next weekend should be friendly for the movies once more (meaning drizzly to rainy); so good holds for family releases again!

It's gonna be interesting to see which movie is going to end with more admissions: BatB or Furious 8. They're running pretty close, but BatB might have the advantage due to being more family-friendly.

I was a bit surprised that BatB dropped so hard this weekend with no new competition and other family releases (even ones longer in release) dropping <10% ... at one point 3,5mil total looked ok but it needs better holds to reach that mark.

Some very positive news from Austria ... propelled by rainy weather and strong performers (F&F8, GotG2, BatB, BossBaby), Austria's April was the strongest since 2006, more than doubling 2016's admissions (which had, of course, worse weekend alignments) - the 2nd quarter is off to a good start! And with hits like StarWars Ep8, FackJuGöhte3 and DespicableMe3, 2017 seems to become about as busy a year as we were hoping.

Some Thursday estimates from insidekino.de/forum:

New Releases:

King Arthur: 17.5k (released in 560 theaters, 2 mostly negative reviews, 1 ok, 3 good, 1 very good) – that's not overwhelming but also no disaster and in line with expectations of around 175-200k admissions OW and 550-600k total
Überflieger: Kleine Vögel, großes Geklapper: ?k (437, mostly ok to good reviews and one very good review)

Holdovers:

GotG2: 24.5k (last Thursday actuals 55k) – was always underestimated in these estimates
Get Out: 13.5k (21k) – a very solid and expected hold
Fast 8: 6.5k (15k)
Going in Style: 2k (2.5k)
Happy Burnout: 2k
