WEEKEND THREAD: Lightyear implodes with 51M DOM, 85.6M WW. THE LAST PIXAR MOVIE EVER?????😱😱😱 | Dominion #1 with 58.66M, Top Gun 44M

My big concern is that Disney will take this as a sign that audiences "aren't ready" for LGBTQ main characters in their movies, and will roll back their current efforts at making their works more diverse in that respect. Which is why I hope Lightyear can at least squeak past 400M worldwide, so they don't write it off as a total loss.

Watched Father of the Bride on HBO Max. It was definitely enjoyable. Andy Garcia is really good in it and the cast did a great job.

This guy is in the movie and steals every scene he is in

I Think You Should Leave Oh My God GIF by The Lonely Island

Would definitely recommend a watch if you have HBO Max. A good time waster for sure.

Personally speaking, I think Disney should stop making it a promotional tactic for movies. Just have the characters exist in the movie without making a big song and dance about it in the promotions and then see if there's actually a boycott or backlash or if it's all just as performative as it seems.

Honestly they haven't part of the time. I might have missed them or forgot, but I don't think I saw any articles prior to the release of Onward or Jungle Cruise or Cruella hyping up their gay characters. I never saw Disney make a grand press release about them or promote them in their movie. I learned about Onward after the first press screenings came out, Jungle Cruise over insider tea that was not picked up by the major trade, and Cruella was a legit surprise for me. Obviously they do this sometimes, but I feel like a lot of people, mainly alt-right grifters, make things a bigger deal than they actually are.

I mean, they aren't usually the ones promoting it, it's publications who run with an off-hand interview quote or some blogger's interpretation of a scene they previewed. Tbh it'd likely be far less controversial if Disney just plain owned up to doing a movie about a gay character and was unambiguous about it.

Another problem is the gay representation is usually half-assed and in projects that don’t have broad appeal. Fantastic Beasts? Lightyear? Eternals? None of these are great, or particularly exciting, with tepid critic response. If Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was gay the movies would still smash, but we aren’t really given gay leads for these franchises.

if Andy took all his toys to watch the movie then how are they surprised who Buzz Lightyear is in the first Toy Story movie? Also, who brings all their toys to a movie? Where are his friends and family? Poor kid has problems

Also, Andy didn't have the aliens till Toy Story 2

Did they even do this with Lightyear, though? AFAIK the only reason we even knew about the gay kiss beforehand was because the fight over it became public during the "Don't Say Gay" backlash. I didn't see it promoted anywhere. They can't exactly control what the press decides to hone in on.

I think if I recall they definitely promoted before the movie Lefou as LGBT, the first Disney LGBT character in the live action Beauty and the Beast. Now it was blink and you miss it like all of Disney's LGBT representation.

Even this is a blink and you miss it moment in Lightyear. God forbid the true sensitive snowflakes can't for 4 seconds watch two women kiss when you know damn well all those outraged republicans definitely have watched graphic lesbian porn in their youth probably.

Jurassic World Dominion is getting an extended cut. If it gets close to 400m May not be a bad idea to re rerelease it

It’s unbelievable to me that they cut the prologue out. Trevorrow actively going out of his way to state the bookends of the movie compliment each other and it’ll resonate more when you see it back in.

I’ve heard in other interviews he’s done that they knew the first act was too long so had to make the tough decision to take it out - but the movie simply doesn’t start well enough without it.  Instead, well most of you have seen it….the news report is dreadful.

I’d definitely go and see this longer cut in theatres.

If the future there will be an entire generation of Republicans who were not allowed to watch Disney movies as kids and you'll be able to sniff them out by asking them about the third act of Turning Red.

nah they'll see it at friend's houses. 😝
