Beast will likely end up having an almost identical opening and total to Crawl ($12M/$39M). Not quite the late summer breakout some were hoping for but not bad at all either. Creature features remain a draw.

"Beast" is the kind of films that will make a lot of money on VOD.  (The film only has 17-day window.)

PVOD has yet to truly impact the legs of a movie (compared to landing on a streaming service with no extra charge).

Looks like first weekend in a while where BO will exceed rather than just meet or fall below expectations (and I suspect holdovers will follow suit)

EDIT: will add a bit of caution with the new releases, where the increasing number of locations running curtailed/reduced hours on weekdays probably helped push some potential Thursday business into Friday, and they may not let out quite as well from TFri as comps would suggest

Too bad the release schedule really is a desert for the next three weeks. There's probably a market for a PG-13 horror movie at the moment but The Invitation looks so derivative that I doubt it breaks out while Three Thousand Years of Longing seems destined for single digits total territory.

As Thor: Love and Thunder passes 330 million with ease this weekend, heading to a final total of 340 million+, I can’t help but think back to those who were 100% convinced it was grossing under 300m total. If we’ve learned anything in the post-pandemic market, it’s that we need to let films play out a bit before making such declarations.

I kinda expected this weekend to break out a bit (due to a confluence of social factors), but looks to be running ahead of even my optimism (should have stuck with my gut on DBS though)

However … also expecting it be short-lived though, with weekdays dropping down even more, next weekend returning to meh territory, Labor Day weekend doing its thing, then into the September slog. So enjoy it while it’s here

Still running just a hair below Don't Breathe 2 on this same weekend last year, should clear $10M, could push up close to $11M
