I think this was Lightstorm & Jim's decision to limit 2D screens, people have to remember 3D is good when done right. Also people are likely to rave harder to their friends about Avatar when they saw the remaster in 3D.

The movie IS a 3D film afterall. All the shots in the movie had 3D in mind when actually filming.
