Yes. This. We'll need to see how Marvels, Strange 3, Shang Chi 2 or whatever else they have coming does before making further judgement.

Now that they don't have their own franchises anymore, include Guardians, Thor, Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, Eternals etc. into these other franchises. Those team-ups are literally what Feige did for Phase 3 to keep up with/stay ahead of the then budding DCEU. I get that he was trying to go smaller with Phases 4-5, but after Secret Wars, he can return to the team-ups.

Of course though, he'll also have Deadpool, Fantastic Four and presumably X-Men up and running by then as well.

Really excellent for GOTG Vol.3. It's the best second weekend drop for an MCU sequel. Also one of the best second weekend drops for a $100+ million opener without a holiday second weekend - it's a rare feat to drop under 50% at this level, especially for this genre. The drop may be even better with actuals.

Can it be one of only a relative handful of comic book movies that hit a 3+ multiplier?

Best Second Weekend Drops for 100M+ Friday Openers (without Holiday Second Weekend):

  1. Top Gun: Maverick (2022): -28.9%
  2. Spider-Man (2002): -37.8%
  3. The Jungle Book (2016): -40.4%
  4. Wonder Woman (2017): -43.3%
  5. Black Panther (2018): -44.7%
  6. Finding Dory (2016): -46.0%
  7. Alice in Wonderland (2010): -46.0%
  8. Toy Story 3 (2010): -46.2%
  9. Beauty and the Beast (2017): -48.3%
  10. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023): -48.9%
  11. Jurassic World (2015): -49.0%*
  12. The Avengers (2012): -50.3%
  13. The Batman (2022): -50.4%
  14. Toy Story 4 (2019): -50.6%^
  15. It (2017): -51.3%
  16. The Secret Life of Pets (2016): -51.3%
  17. The Dark Knight (2008): -52.5%
  18. Thor: Ragnarok (2017): -53.5%

*2nd weekend was not technically a holiday weekend, but it did benefit significantly from Father’s Day (almost flat on Sunday)

^2nd weekend wasn’t a holiday weekend for US/NA, but it was for CANADA (Canada Day weekend arguably boosted its Sunday gross)

Peace,

Mike

In the top 10 only Alice and Beauty didn’t hit 3x, but both was ~2.9x (and both with lesser WOM than Guardians)

Unless competition crashes it too hard, seems like +360M is happening

Been seeing online edits of GOTG trilogy remade as Star Wars posters in the artwork of the Original Trilogy. And it’s making me truly believe that this series is going to stand the test of time as Marvel’s best.

Sure, there will be other Spider-Men. There will be more Avengers movies. But in 30 years from now, this will be the series (along with maybe the first Black Panther movie, and Endgame) that people are going to remember, and will be regarded as classics of the genre. The quality and reception of GOTG3 solidifies that for me. Strong trilogy all-around, not a single entry is “disliked” by the general public.

If they will do a reunion of the original Guardians 20 Years from now, people will go nuts

Agreed. If that happens, it will be a No Way Home type event. This franchise is going to age really well IMO.

Great hold for Guardians. Disney must be kicking themselves right now that they lost Gunn to DC after falling for those right wing Twitter trolls trying to cancel him. Oh well, guess they could always bring back Whedon to save the MCU 😂

He made endless "jokes" about sex with underage (children) boys. Right or left wing, that's gross and Hollyweird conveniently chooses to look the other way when needed, and to act extra outraged when needed.

I think all people are weird to a degree.

Look at how easily voters on both sides forgive creepy behavior from both major presidential candidates.

Yeah. I was confused about this idea that the left wing would be tolerant to that kind of "jokes".

The left wing has complained about offensive "jokes" in the past.

He came up in Troma, edgy jokes was his MO. Who cares about a few jokes he made 10+ years ago?
