THE LITTLE MERMAID WEEKEND THREAD

Recommended Posts

Missed some discussion but I don’t get even with Across looking likely to have a strong OW potentially the biggest for a CBM this year (ie like 130m+), would it cause TLM to drop big. Sure both are big family films but TLM likely will skew more female and younger and domestic WOM seems good. A 50-55% drop sure but I think 60% is a stretch.

Also to be clear I don't think audiences are "racist", just that as Charlie said there's less black audience in these places, just like how the non-Hispanic white numbers in America are also awful for alot of these films.

It's correct that The Little Mermaid flopping doesn't prove anything about international box office being racist, but that seems to be obtusely ignoring the point that this underperformance happens with virtually every major release with a black lead (not all, I'm sure someone will come up with an example of two). This has been an acknowledged reality for years and idk why people are suddenly pleading ignorance to it in order to make people who talk about race look like dumb libtards. The point of my joke was that this always happens.

It could also have to do with domestic audience being where there is the most concentrated group of African descent peoples in any notable film market by a long shot. Therefore, it simply may not resonate as much in some markets, but doesn’t necessarily imply racism.  If anything, it shows how white beauty ideals have been pushed so hard by the likes of Hollywood for so long now as to be appealing in cultures where there aren’t really white people either.  That would probably be the case for black people too if mainstream Western media had perpetuated it for decades (and obviously why continued DEI in modern blockbusters is important).

Where are the Mods

Right here, hi. Don't worry, I'm making sure things don't get out of hand and have hid a few posts that went out of line, and I think things are doing fine. Yes there's some heavy conversations happening, but there's no reason for them to be hidden away (if anything, that's even worse), so long as things don't get personal. Things haven't. We're good.

Oh definitely. I think Charlie mostly nailed it, though I also think there's a contingent of (mostly white) liberals of other races in America who crossover unlike other places.

Fast X

Mamoa's character in Game of Thrones was Karl Drogo iirc

Ohhhhh

See when I read "Drogo", my mind immediately went to Rocky, not Game of Thrones. And I was very confused, because Creed 3's not playing in theaters anymore.

Early Fresh Friday numbers on a big weekend. We are feasting, boys.

Little Mermaid is going for 40M+ according to Voldemort. 140M+ 4 day possible if that happens.

Ahh Creed 3, that movie would have been so fucked if it released a month later than it did.
