Father’s Day/Juneteenth Weekend Thread | Flash implodes with 55M, Elemental bombs with 29M, holdovers hold atrociously | Theaters are dead, streaming is dead. Everything is dead really.

Flash - terrible

Elemental -  beyond terrible

The Blackening - below expectations

ATSV - poor hold

Transformers - terrible

TLM - also a poor hold

GOTG3 - very good despite new competition and losing screens

Boogeyman - decent

Fast X - meh

Mario - had its legs sawn off by the new movies

Honestly one of the worst performing weekends I've ever seen

Guardians... The real MVP this summer blockbuster season and it was the first one to release for the summer blockbuster season. It's a word of mouth monster. Should well this weekend too. Then, probably double features with Indy 5 to boost it a bit and of course it'll get a nice late bump for the week of the 4th of July then be done. But, still, looking like maybe as high as 365M+ is possible DOM with these late legs.

The Flash had hoped for a three-day start of at least $70 million so as to come in ahead of such disappointing DC titles as Black Adam, which collected $67 million in its first three days.

The studio’s leadership has been hyping The Flash for months, with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn proclaiming it is the greatest superhero movie they’ve ever seen. Many critics don’t agree with the assessment; the pic currently has a 67 percent Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. A bigger problem: Audiences gave the movie a mediocre B CinemaScore (as a way of comparison, Elemental received an A).

While superhero fare often skews heavily male, The Flash is even more so than usual. On Friday, for example, 73 percent of ticket buyers were male.

Box office pundits are divided as to whether Ezra Miller’s off-screen woes are impacting the film’s performance. Miller was arrested multiple times in 2022 and was the subject of several controversies, culminating in the actor issuing a statement in August of last year apologizing for their behavior and saying they would receive help for “complex mental health issues.” Miller walked the red carpet at the movie’s premiere but has otherwise been absent from doing publicity for The Flash.

Definitely a rough weekend due to both The Flash and Elemental coming on the absolute low end of their expectations. Saw the latter last night and the audience response was highly positive so it should at least leg it out to $100M at least. Meanwhile, my showing for the former this evening has barely even filled 1/3 of a big auditorium, which is pretty sad for such a hyped, fan service-y comic book movie on opening weekend.

On the positive side, though, Past Lives continues to expand well. And then there's Asteroid City with the biggest PTA launch since La La Land 6.5 years ago. Excited to see how both these movies do when they go wide next weekend.

So what’s winning summer DOM Guardians of Spider-Verse

Spider Verse definitely. Summer days have been great to it. It'll stabilize and still likely get to 400M+ DOM... That said, not the insane legs many had hoped for and audience reception is remarkable. Thinking this series has a ceiling that's maybe 25M~ higher DOM than whatever Across finishes will.

Across below gotg2 imo but should beat 3.

They gave a pretty bullish sun for flash btw, should drop with actuals (and maybe even under Shazam’s official OW though I already consider it under).
