$5 million more than The Flash is still more people choosing to go see Indiana Jones. Yes, this is a numbers forum, but damn, there seem to be so many excuses for non-Disney films that bomb. RotB isn't Disney. Fast X isn't Disney. Ruby Gillman isn't Disney, and yet the focus is skewed toward Disney because some people are still raging over the Lightyear kiss and need Disney to somehow fail when their movie division isn't even their money-making division. Meanwhile, other movie studios are barely breaking even on certain films and don't have a fleet of Theme Parks to lean back on.

It's funny, I kinda feel Indy 5 should have been a 2019 release. It makes sense in that year. I wouldn't be shocked if it was intended to release back then at some point.

As far as expectations vs. reality is concerned, The Flash is definitely a much more embarrassing flop than Indiana Jones could ever be simply because the studio for the former worked overtime trying to will it into being a blockbuster until the very last second. The latter was always more of a gamble that had no hook beyond "we (again) finally made another one" and therefore had more room to go either way.

The takeaway shouldn't be "Flash did worse" or "Indy did worse." They are all doing bad. Even Wes Anderson's Asteroid City is floundering compared to its budget!

 

That said, I understand why people are turning the 2023 box office into a weird culture war. With a SAG strike looming and the WGA strike entering its third month, it's a scary time for theatrical.

What they decided to do with Indy 5 just isn't gonna work as well right now. Maybe if was a phenomenal movie? PWB being the female lead was a fun risk and she has a ton of fun in the movie but that risk didn't pay off... She's famous for Fleabag and writing stuff. Audiences have close to zero clue who she is... Would've been better server doing as they did for Jungle Cruise when they cast Emily Blunt... Should've cast someone of her stature rather than close to a complete unknown.

 

Mads might be the best part of the movies. But, he's been the villain so often in major franchises and he's another Nazi... Just feels recycled both in casting and writing. 

 

That said, someone said something about WB maybe not feeling as bad about Flash because other movies aren't doing great either? Nah. Nope. Friggin' TRotB has already passed Flash in dailies. While TRotB and IJDoD aren't doing great both will make considerably more than the Flash. Yes... I understand that Indy may lose more money due to budget, I'm simply speaking to admissions here though for 3 mega franchise blockbusters. Transformers and Indy will sell considerably more tickets WW than Flash.

In what universe is this opening not awful. Crystal skull opened to 100/150m 5 day.

MI and bond are the ones that open small but still  even skyfall opened to 88m and spectre 70m . 

 

Audiences can appear on OW  for bond and Indy if the right conditions are available.

 

It's the MI franchise that really  opens really low.

 

The three franchises target the same audience but they don't exactly behave the same way.
