I wonder if the pay-it-forward method could be new approach for mid-low budget drama movies, especially those small movie with great WOM. SoF's BO run so far have about 10% of the revenue stemming from Pay-it-forward platform, if "just" 10% is big enough to set a small/medium movie on fire, studio should start to explore the viability of this method.

On one hand, Pay It Forward is not so different from stars/prominent people buying out screenings for "worthy" movies for schoolkids/neighborhoods, just on a more individualized scale. OTOH, Angel's strategy works because they're a small, new studio releasing mostly faith-based material when pop culture often frowns upon that. Many in the fanbase are churchgoers used to proselytizing and tithing already, and Pay It Forward aligns with that history.

If Neon had appealed to their fans to crowdfund tickets to, IDK, Spencer, would it have worked? A24 fans buy merch but might push back more on donating to them directly, especially since Pay It Forward prices are inflated (it would likely be more than $15 for projects with more coastal appeal).  Maybe if they framed it as a "cultural exchange"...

Yeah, the movie was made by some deranged people. But it also seems like a good and well-done movie, so I'm happy it's doing well.

I am  not happy to see Fascists and Fanatics make money.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Probome is too many people exist in a fanboy geek bubble, and it distorts everything. The US in real danger of becoming a real like Republic of Gilead, and people has  better wake up, get off their butts and do something about it.

I think it was Deadline who called Sound of Freedom a mini-American Sniper and that seems about right. The funny thing was that one premiered at a film festival in November to mid reviews, so it was dismissed as an awards player and its content went largely undebated. Then it went wide in January to enormous box office, and  suddenly there was all this controversy online about the accuracy and the politics and what a dangerous message it was sending, often from people who hadn't seen the movie. That was a mainstream studio film, and no one in the production was promoting it on social media with conspiracy theories, at least.

But overall the beats are very familiar.

Isn't funny how it's always these movies that get this treatment? This board has jumped the shark and went more Mao than reddit on this film.

1) a movie is allowed to just be entertainment and offer emotional catharsis

2) there is no group of people that own the right to present a chathartic movie or an audience that doesn't have a right to it

3) none of us know any of these people, or what they have been through for how they needed to make sense of the world. I watched an interview of Tim Ballard today talking about having to watch hours of child abuse videos to write evidence reports for court. And you know what? I don't care that a guy like that needs to believe in objective evil and god, and make sense of his work by thinking he is on a mission from god.

My brother was a communications specialist in Iraq where he had to document the hostage, torture, and execution videos. That was almost 20 years ago and he still isn't normal. He cannot function on any productive level and lays back in a recliner watching MASH and war movies repeatedly. Why? B/c nothing is important anymore and misses having purpose. So if a guy like Ballard has to believe his is on a mission from God and is able to turn that into saving some kids along the way, maybe stop criticizing how he thinks of himself, talks about himself, or gets it done, and just be happy is functioning and some kids are safer.

This board and it's reaction to the movie is an embarassment. This is never what leftism was, this is extremism that the marxist perverted the left with. This is not tolerance, empathy, understanding, or respect for others.

A random review of the movie that popped up on my YouTube. Some interesting views about the movie itself without falling into the noise around it (refreshing). I can relate to what he says about Caviezel's performance based on his previous roles.

At this point I don't see how it misses a hundred million. Based on a 4 million Thursday you're looking at a weekend of at least 15 million and that would put it right around 70. 100 million pretty much seems inevitable now.

how does sound of freedom still have a 100% audience score on RT (5000+ reviews)

Considering how big it's gotten and the discourse around it, I'm surprised it hasn't attracted enough "hate-watchers" to knock it down to at least 99%

I'm not gonna lie seeing this special message makes me not want to see this film. It's extremely pretentious and so self indulging. Like i'm still debating on going to see it cause I hear the film itself is not bad and doesn't preach and raises awareness for a important topic but at the same time....everything surrounding this film is just so....UGH.

If you're the one paying for the ticket and you think it looks bad, why not just skip it? There's only so many hours in your life.

Might as well throw in my two cents about this movie.

I’ll probably watch it eventually (since I basically watch everything that grosses more than 5M domestic lol), but I’m not watching it in theaters. While I don’t think that everyone who sees this is a crazy QAnon conspiracist (that sort of generalized labeling is part of what’s wrong with the internet), it’s pretty clear that it is attracting a lot of those people. And frankly, I don’t exactly feel comfortable sitting in a theater with a bunch of them. I’m not a member of an oppressed community in North America, but many of my friends are, and the things I have heard said about people like my friends and family are horrifying.

I’ve heard, and I’m sure, that the movie is actually quite good. Which is why I’ll probably watch it eventually. But the discourse surrounding it, both from its biggest promoters and biggest detractors, is so so toxic at the moment that I really don’t want to get involved in it. Once a lot of this has passed, and I’m not watching the movie as a cog in a larger political battle, and can just watch it as a piece of art/entertainment/awareness, I would feel much more comfortable doing that.

For those of you who have seen the movie and applaud its messaging, I’m really happy you took the time to learn more about an important topic, and I hope that you/we can all take the next steps in ensuring something as horrible as child trafficking never happens. For those of you who aren’t going to see the movie, I am well aware off, and agree with many of, the reasons you have for not doing so.

There is a timer at the end telling you when the message will start.  So, (as I did), you can feel free and get up anytime before the timer hits zero.
