Could we be looking at the first year where a female director has the highest grossing film of the year worldwide?

The Numbers are insane.

Frozen in 2013 was female directed and won the worldwide year

Not sure Barbie can beat Mario worldwide but domestically if it pulls ahead, I believe it'll be the first time (ever?) the biggest domestic film was female directed

Mario is still a long way away. There's a chance now, of course, but let's get the first 7 days out of the way.

I dont know about that. Barbies start is absolutely phenomenal for sure, but catching Marios 1,36B will be very hard.

Though not impossible anymore id say! The kind of numbers Barbie is posting + the insane WOM + the fact that even China now has signs of a much bigger than expected run incoming, all of this is very promising. Still, 1,3B is a very lofty goal.

hmm. 12 more pages needed. we can do this.

THE LAST JEDI is best Star Wars film.

It is, actually. Mandalorian and Andor are the very best of Star Wars though.

I had to chuckle at the takes that WB will give up on DC because Barbie is such a huge hit when DC makes up most of their all time domestic box office of all time.

Clearly, the next step is Barbie V Batman.

I feel trades need to make a distinction for Greta being the first SOLO woman director to be posting these numbers. Deadline said Barbie has the 2nd highest WW opening for a female director after Captain Marvel's Anna Boden. But Boden was one of that film's two directors. Ditto for Jennifer Lee and Frozen.

Being the highest grossing solo female director film is quite noteworthy IMO so not sure why Barbie is being lumped in with films like CM and Frozen that had two directors each to (slightly) underplay Gerwig's achievement.

It's definitely too early to talk about $600 million for Barbie, Imho. If the movie OW is $162m as Deadline report than with similiar legs to TDK 15 years ago, it would finish with around $545 million. Audience scores on RT and on IMDb are not as overwhelming as Batman's. For now, $500m is the target.

Oppenheimer with $82.4m OW = even $325 million domestic is possible. I would say $275-325m for now.

It's not a real weekend thread till we've had 10 pages discussing the Star Wars sequels for the umpteenth time.

This is all for the greater good though, aka 200 pages.
