However, consider the audience didn't make Marvel pay with Guardians 3. So, the situation is "we will make Marvel pay as long as the movie doesn't have characters we care about".

Guardians 3 underperformed on Opening Weekend. It Got good legs beacuse of its WoM.

Yeah. The Marvels is partially suffering for the sins of prevous movies.

Guardians 3 did look like it would be paying for it, and it did not gross more than part 2 in the end. Guardians 3 was trending low in box office before they started the early screenings and reviews and word of mouth and fans remembered that they loved the characters and wanted to say goodbye.

Every genre has its ups on downs, and YA peaked somewhere around Potter and Twilight ending and Hunger Games starting.

Youth Book reading in generals I would imagine

Big drop in reading has social media start to pick-up among them around 2013, would have probably been sooner without the Lords of Rings and specially Potter phenomenon.

It feels like a long stretch to argue that it would have outgrossed Catching Fire if it would have been one movie.

Hunger Games without a Hunger Games is a harder sale (and you cannot do the games 3 movies in a row either) and those high concept affair are almost always better in a barely explain world that are just a metaphor for a real one, would it be the cube or something else. Do again the director change to have one that have time to do the movie, a single one, etc... if it is really good maybe it match Catching Fire but that already exceptional.

Harry Potter (where every successive movie opened bigger than the one before)

The first Potter was probably the biggest one of the whole franchise, but even without taking inflation into account not every Potter movie opened bigger than the one before, maybe you meant the first Lords of the Rings ?

also find it insulting that comics is “less reading”

Well they are. Something with less words is easier to read. Reading a graphic novel like Watchmen takes a short amount of time than reading something like The Grapes of Wrath. I took a comics class once, which was an English course but using comics as the text, and the reading in that class was much easier than in all my other literature classes.

Captain Marvel 1.1 billion dollar gross obfuscated what I have been saying for years. Carol Danvers, as she is portrayed in her first movie, is a dull over powered character who is hard to care about. She's the Henry Cavill Superman of the MCU. People thought the film was fine and fun but never attached to the lead character. So that killed her too late nearly 5 years later sequel.

It is bloodbath for old movies although all three main new releases can’t even cross 100m combined.

That dream scenario expansion isn’t exactly great. Should still be able to hit 10k PTA but I am no longer sure if this can do decently during wide expansion. Priscilla is still on track for 20m finish, a strong mid week grosses definitely help.

Holdovers is basically following bottoms BO route, a meh numbers after expansion. Shouldn’t have drop week-to-week if you are doubling your theater count.

that is it for KOTFM…..
