August looks filled with studio dumps.  Below, is the August release schedule from HSX.

Im not sold on June.  Before, May started I think people would have said Apes, Furiosa and Fall Guy can match Guardians.

I can see Bad Boys, Inside Out and Quiet Place matching just SpiderVerse.  Ive seen way to many movies underperform to think anything besides Deadpool is going to breakout.

It Ends With Us could be another Where the Crawdads Sing. Trap also looks like more of a potential breakout than M. Night's last two efforts ever did. And Alien could find an audience (to an extent) if it's a quality movie to semi-combat the fatigue surrounding that franchise.

The rest of the month does look filled with typical End of Summer dumps though, yeah.

Numerous movies finished between 195m and 199m in the past. (And between 95m and 99m, and 295m and 299m). It's normal. The only time I can remember a studio very obviously and forcibly dragging a movie towards a milestone for weeks was Superman Returns (see below, and check out those averages), but if a movie can't get extremely close - like within a million, two at the most - on its own, they don't care.

What am I looking at here?

Looks interesting. Is there any reading into that?

My mom and my sister both want to see Trap, unprompted by me. They are definitely NOT “in the loop” with regards to upcoming movie releases (although my sister just started part time managing the local theater in her town). I could definitely see it becoming a breakout.

It ends with us is big big big. Maybe the bigger book phenomenon upon under 30 women made into a movie since Hunger Games.

Don't forget where the crawdad sings (with a much older audience) made 17M first weekend and then 90M final.

I think an opening of 55-60m for Bad Boys, 95-110m for Inside Out 2 and 40-50m for A Quiet Place: Day One would all be solid. Or an over performance depending on presales. I guess the question is, what is considered breaking out for all these films?

The most watched movie of the weekend

This is a great example of why Netflix rankings don’t mean that much, at least when it comes to movies. This movie would have bombed if it was released theatrically. People just put this stuff on in the background while they do other stuff.

That’s why 65 bomber in theaters and then got in the Netflix top 10 for a while.

None of these Netflix films have even the remotest cultural impact whatsoever. Challengers has had more cultural impact than any Netflix original since Bird Box despite the "mediocre" box office.

I think there was a notification on my phone about this. This isn't a real movie.

Last year for Netflix has been mediocre but it's not true they don't have culturale impact since Bird box...if you think challengers has some cultural impact (i guess you mean like Twitter and stuff like that) definitely movies like don't look up or knives out 2 were too. Probably others, these two came to my mind.

Uh oh for GODZILLA×KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE. 200M is 95% dead. Also, did Sony expand GHOSTBUSTERS: THE FROZEN EMPIRE this weekend?

I’m sorry, no offence, but you might be really out of touch because Rebel Moon absolutely shifted the landscape. Things CHANGED when Kora and Darrian Bloodaxe lead their forces against Atticus Noble.

Most don't but, despite weak reviews, Don't Look Up was big & buzzy. People seemed to resonate with it and it combined good numbers with abnormal anecdotes about people actually talking about the film in real life.

i wonder when that will stream on amazon prime, during the strikes they planned to drop it straight to streaming so i imagine 80+m worldwide is better than straight to streaming

i didn't love glass onion or don't look up but at the end of the day, those movies were made by directors with a vision. Atlas/ Red notice/Heart of Stone/Damsel are the netflix equivalent to white noise. They're just there so you have something new to press play on when you open the app every few weeks. Almost any movie would do good if it's available at no extra cost and you can stop watching if it gets boring, i've lost count on how many times i've started one of these netfix movies and turned it off within a half hour
