I don't agree. Movies like gone with the wind or E.T or mary poppins didn't get a sequel for a reason. Nowadays we would take a sequel for them after 3 years (actually we got the mary poppins sequel after 50 yearsΒ πŸ˜…).

Β

You can see how the sequels policy changed from disney itself. No matters The lion king was the biggest movie of all time for disney at the moment...the story was based on that shakespeare play so no sequels (at least only for vhs market or disney channel). Now we got frozen 2,3, 4 in the official "classic series". In this era we would take lion king 2,3,4 and 5 in a span of 15 years 😢

Β

Sure, the amount of sequels has increased, and with that we get more and more unnecessary sequels

Β

But unnecessary sequels have been a thing since forever, hollywood has always been trying to milk one-off hits, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

Β

If they were doing it even in times when sequels often decreased upon the original, imagine now that the market seems to only respond to the familiar

Gladiator II is probably going to depend on how it looks and how it's ultimately received. Luckily it does have a pretty strong cast to bring it attention: Denzel taking on his first non-lead role in decades feels like a big-ish deal, while Paul Mescal/Pedro Pascal/Joseph Quinn is essentially catnip for Thirsty Social Media (unless they're uglified by the movie ala Hemsworth in Furiosa). We'll just have to wait and see.

That MΓ©xico number is ridiculous... I would've never imagined IO2 could have the chance to become Pixar's biggest international grosser.

I won’t accept this slander that Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace was not necessary in 1996.Β

When using current exchange rates and in like-for-like markets, the $295M global start is bigger than animation opening record-holderΒ The Super Mario Bros Movie. Using a similar metric, the Kelsey Mann-directedΒ Inside OutΒ sequel is the best international animation opening of all time (surpassingΒ Frozen 2’s $135.4M).Β

Β

Β

so I guess it's the biggest opening for animation in all 39 markets.

At $155M, IO2 is - by itself - the highest grossing weekend since August 3rd of last year (Barbenheimer week 3 + Meg 2 + TMNT)

Β

That’s 46 weeks in a row below $150M aggregateΒ

All movies are unnecessary when you really think about it πŸ€”Β

Since Disney tends to underestimate, the opening might be closer $160M. Holy.

Β

Definitely feels like Disney's making a comeback year after some high-profile misses. In addition to Deadpool & Wolverine and Moana 2 sure to be massive, I would definitely hold the phone on the "Sonic 3 (will this end up punting to 2025?) > Mufasa" predictions given how powerful the Lion King brand itself is after 30 years.
